The book concludes by discussing conservation in the region, highlighting five regional biodiversity hotspots where the challenges of desertification, habitat loss, and other threats to plant biodiversity are particularly acute.

Supervision of over 45 Ph.D. and M.Sc. students. Research in population and community ecology of desert, coastal and mountain ecosystems; biodiversity, conservation ecology and management of protected areas; biological interactions; allelopathy; environmental pollution, phyto-remediation, restoration ecology; and environmental impact assessment. Published over 150 scientific papers, edited and co-authored several books. Implemented research programs in Egypt, Libya, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Participated in many international conferences. English-Arabic translation of environmental articles for Scientific American.


Jon Lovett-Doust: B. Sc. (Hons. Biol.) from Queen's University, Kingston, Canada, and Ph.D. from University of Wales. Presently emeritus at University of Windsor. Research in macro-ecology, plant population biology and reproductive ecology. Carried out research in Egypt and elsewhere. Life soon settled into a rhythm and then, one day, the beatings started. Jerry began to hide behind bad behaviour and at the age of 12, his defiance resulted in him being sent to a boarding for boys with behavioural problems. Life then got worse when his housemaster, the man whose job it was to take care of him, began a regime of mental, physical and sexual abuse. Years of self-hatred and guilt led to Jerry suffering from a severe stammer and, eventually, he tried to hang himself. This was the turning point and, after finally finding the courage to go to the authorities, Jerry and numerous other victims came forward and were instrumental in the conviction and imprisonment of their abuser. Devil's Child is the devastating true story of a childhood destroyed by abuse and of a young man's struggle to try to come to terms with the past and believe in the future.

Horrifying tale of abuse

Jerry Coyne confronts the demons of his past in this horrifying tale of his years of abandonment & abuse.

I found this book very hard to put down. I volunteer with abused children, & most of them refuse to cooperate with therapists, thinking they can handle it themselves. Sadly, this isn't the case.

This book is a poignant reminder that evil exists in our world; of how the people entrusted with the care of our most fragile children can abuse their responsibilities; and the life-long damage these acts have on the adult psyche.

It is also a story of HOPE & inspiration for the victims, as Coyne shows there IS a chance for happiness despite a childhood filled with pain.

The charaters are well formed, the thoughts & feelings of the victim take a bite out of your heart, and it's often a brutal ride. Although not graphic to the extreme, it's still not for the faint of heart.

About the Author

Gene Edward Veith Jr. (PhD, University of Kansas) is provost and professor of literature at Patrick Henry College and the director of the Cranach Institute at Concordia Theological Seminary. He has been a columnist for World magazine and TableTalk, and is the author of a number of noted books on Christianity and culture, including God at Work.

Marvin Olasky (PhD, American Culture, University of Michigan) is the editor-in-chief of World Magazine. He has been interviewed numerous times by the national media as the developer of the concepts of compassionate conservatism and biblically objective journalism and is the author of twenty books.

Great overview of the key issues

This is about the third book I've read by Gene Veith and I enjoy his clear writing style very much. This book has a helpful overview of the main genres of literature and their place in the Christian worldview. The real gems in this book are Veith's discussions of Fiction and Fantasy. There would certainly be crossover into the realm of filmmaking for the thoughtful Christian screenwriter. I also found the end chapters on the development of literature throughout history, and how Christians interacted and critiqued the errors of their day a helpful corrective to much of the existential Christian nonsense which tries to pass itself off as "Christian literature" these days. My only disappointment is Veith's repeated use of Madeline L'Engle as a positive example of a Christian author. Certainly, she has some spiritual overtones to her books, but I don't think the worldview she presents could be called distinctly "Christian". The other slight criticism I have is that I would have liked to see Veith give more discussion to developing a model for how Christians can interact with their culture through literature. He kind of assumes too much here.

For all you science nerds and techies

Dr. Veith, like C.S. Lewis, has the wonderful ability to communicate insights and wisdom to those who are unlike himself. I am a stereotypical engineer with an underdeveloped appreciation of arts and literature. His books however, have motivated me to explore and discover new worlds offered by both. Reading "State of the Arts" led me to acquiring Rembrandt's paintings, "Storm on the Sea of Galilee" and "Raising of the Cross" - both have become my primary source of solace in times of anxiety. I have also purchased a membership to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and eagerly look forward to what I might discover on my visits.

I am only part way through, "Reading between the lines," but clearly recognize the master's touch. I was sitting BAM (Books a Million) with my grandson after finishing the chapter on fiction and began reading Madeleine L'Engles, "Wrinkle in Time." I had to put down the first book to finish the second; I don't think Dr. Veith would have forgiven me if I did not. While L'Engles' book is already biased toward the scientific type, I could now read with a consciousness of how she used the characters, plot, theme and setting to fire the imagination while telling her story.

I don't know what the value of Dr. Veith's books are to those who have already cultivated a taste and knowledge for good art and literature but if you are like me, wanting in those areas, but would like to venture into that other world this is a great place to start!

This Book has the wrong title!!!

The only problem with this book is that it has the wrong title. It shouldn't be called a "Christian" guide to literature, but simply a guide to literature. I heartily recommend this book to both my Christian and non-Christian friends.
Mr. Veith clearly explains the importance of literature in our modern society. His description of the different literary forms gave me a new appreciation for some genres that in the past I had avoided. This book is important to both the avid reader as well as some one who would like to develop an appreciation for literature. It is most appropriate for anyone who has an interest in literature, not just Christians.

Fledgling author Adam Bagdasarian surprisingly follows up his grim, highly lauded first novel Forgotten Fire with a series of humorous, autobiographical sketches about his childhood and adolescence from ages 5 to 20. Bagdasarian is at his funniest when commenting on the trials and torments of puberty, especially when it comes to the opposite sex. In the title story, sixth-grader "Will" (the thinly disguised author) discovers that French kissing doesn't just happen: "I tried to find a way to kiss her and breathe at the same time, but no matter where I turned my head, her nose was always there." And in "Going Steady" Will realizes that dating a seventh-grade girl is going to require diplomacy when she "handed me a small white stuffed unicorn with silver glitter on its horn ... as though it were a baseball signed by Willie Mays, and I took it as though it were a poison apple." Beyond dating drama, Bagdasarian's teen self also explores the idea of old age and death. In "A Short Life," he melodramatically fantasizes a lump on his head is a tumor and he will probably die before seeing Europe, and in the more serious "My Tutor," he is moved to tears by an aged geometry teacher who can no longer remember, let alone teach, familiar proofs. By turns witty, ridiculous, and poignant (the stories about Bagdasarian's much beloved father are among the more touching pieces) First French Kiss is a short, sweet collection that teenagers of all ages will read with pleasure and recognition. This volume of brief, sparely wrought stories encapsulates significant moments during a boy's youth. Writing alternately in the voice of the boy, Will, and in third person, Bagdasarian (Forgotten Fire) poignantly re-creates universal "traumas," both minor and major. Some vignettes are humorous, such as Will's account of his disappointingly unromantic first make-out session, his memory of being Scotch-taped by his older brother and his explanation of how he became one of the "popular boys" at age 10. Other scenes, more somber in tone, evoke Will's recurring fears and expanding knowledge of mortality. The narrator's obsession with the aging process, eloquently expressed in "Time" ("His heart was sick with sorrow and nostalgia and grief and the knowledge that even this moment was doomed to pass"), foreshadows the death of Will's father. Although the entries are not arranged in chronological order, readers will perceive Will's steady forward movement. And if the shifts between first and third person don't enhance the storytelling, the narrative is nonetheless evocative in its entwinement of childlike candor with adult wisdom. Ages 12-up.

Grade 8 Up-Memories of childhood and adolescence are revealed through stories told by Will as he grapples with karate lessons and school-yard fights, and dreams of being a writer. A hilarious account of a first kiss unfolds through the refreshing voice of a delightfully honest sixth grader. Stories flash back to the age of 5 and forward to the age of 20 with a fair amount of time devoted to the wondrous, yet tortured, years in between. A story about the ambivalence of going steady in seventh grade describes "Linda" as someone who "-was looking for someone to love much as a boa constrictor looks for a small pig or owl to swallow." The account of the day Will's brother leaves for college is a touching piece with a hint of sadness. The last stories involve the protagonist's famous songwriter father, who is portrayed as larger-than-life, loving yet critical; his death marks Will's transition from boy to man. Well-developed characters and amusing insights into some universal experiences make this title a rewarding choice.

My friends both recommended this book and I really thought it was both funny and amusing (yes...they are different things). This story of a boy's life is full of many anecdotes, some insightful, all funny. I really recommend

The Joys of Teenage Trauma

Adam Bagdasarian offers up several short, wonderful tales of the trails, indecision, fears and strange motivations that make being a teenager such a strange and magical time in anyone's life. Whether you are a teenager going through those times or an adult who can now look back at them in humor, "First French Kiss" is a delightful read. With stories depicting such common problems as social acceptance, camping, and an overactive imagination, the memories just come flooding back. Every reader will find at least one of the short vignettes that will speak directly to them. For me it was the experience of Little League, Going Steady, and, of course, that First French Kiss. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip back to my teenage years and the traumatic (but now humorous) times. A fun read for teenagers and adults.

at first unorganized, but ties itself together

"First French Kiss and other Traumas..." definitely had its moments. Throughout these excerpts from the writers youth, he tells entertaining stories, but in a random and unorganized style. While reading the book, i was entertained, but at the same time i was puzzled as to why he was choosing which story to tell, and the order he chose to arrange the stories in. However, within the last two stories, the reader engaged me and made me feel like i understood everything he was going through. With the death of his father, the most captivating scenario he described in his memoir to his father was his father vs. him AND his brother in an arm wrestling contest. That scenario captured the relationship he had with his father: the stereotypical (charming none the less) father-son relationship where the father is a big strong man and the son looks up to him. this book will have you make you want to cherish your youth years. it is truley a gem.
