not quite elementary

Nice idea, but bad execution...
There are numerous mistakes and errors in either the
solutions or with the wording of the puzzle.
i.e. Puzzle has "men outnumber women 5 to 1" but
solution states "since women outnumber men 5 to 1"
And while some of the puzzles are clearly just for curiosity
and not meant to be seriously solved by the reader,
most of the puzzles are glorified algebra and geometry problems
rather than mental exercises.
Also, the book appears to be written for someone from England
as there is numerous terminology and colloquial references
that would likely be unfamiliar to most Americans.

Not for the Holmes aficionado

This is a handsomely designed hardcover book that purports to relate to Sherlock Holmes mysteries. The puzzles unfortunately have hardly anything to do with the Conan Doyle stories. About half of these puzzles are mathematical oddities that relate to someone's age being 3 times that of their youngest sibling who is 1/2 as old as a third child, and so on. You might need calculators for these because the math involves quarters, eighths, and even sixteenths of a year. Another set of puzzles are of the brother-in-law's son's cousin variety. Occasionally you get a Holmes-style puzzle, set in England, and sometimes directly related to the stories. A few rely on a drawing to give you a clue to the answer, but while the drawings fit the general antique look of the book, it is often hard to understand all the objects being shown, one of which is usually the clue. I spent more time just giving up and looking at the answer than really trying to solve these puzzles. The book needs a major overhaul if it is going to continue to be sold under the current title.

Easily the worst book of this type I have ever ...

Easily the worst book of this type I have ever run into (and I have the original collection of Minute Mysteries by Austin Ripley and have acquired many others through the years). So many inaccuracies, incomplete solutions, repetitive puzzle types, where there are multiple solutions to mathematical puzzles you are only given one, silly solutions where the age is calculated to 12 1/4 years old, but none of the other ages are anything but full years. I'll stop now, save your $$$.
