About the Author
Pushcart Prize-winning author Jerry Stahl has written six books, including the memoir Permanent Midnight (made into a film with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson), and the novels Pain Killers and I, Fatty (optioned by Johnny Depp). Former Culture Columnist for Details, Stahl’s widely anthologized fiction and journalism have appeared in a variety of places, including Esquire, The New York Times, Playboy, The Rumpus, and The Believer. He has also written extensively for film and television, including the highest rated episodes of CSI and, most recently, the HBO film Hemingway & Gelhorn, with Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen.

Disturbing and brilliant

Tweekers.
Rail thin, bad greasy skin, rotted horse teeth, receding gums, inflamed scratches on the forearms and hands, mile a minute talk, talk, talk, talk, talk for hours and hours and hours on end, until they finally bottom out and collapse into a coma like sleep.....
Meth has been a national obsession over the last fifteen years. Dozens of writers, songwriters, filmmakers, and television folks have used it as fodder to one degree of success or another. But the one fault of most artists when trying to capture the lives of methheads has been their inability to capture the frantic, frenetic life of the dedicated tweeker who will eventually turn into toothless spoiled apple people with jaundiced yellow skin and eyes and a willingness to do anything to get high. (Vince Gilligan and the gang managed to so in season 4 of Breaking Bad.)
Of course, the one writer who has been most in touch with the mind of the addict is Jerry Stahl, and he tackles the tweeker head on, unblinking and with zero fear in Bad Sex on Speed.
As expected, Stahl's writing is razor sharp, and spot on detailing the world of the speed freak. Certain passages--such as a puppy slurping up acetone run off, or a rotting, constantly naked, child molesting step-father--are cringe inducing, and to certain readers may seem over the top, but Stahl's deft observations ring true and without sentimentality or glorification, letting the reader experience brief, ugly glimpses of this all too disturbing world.

About the Author
"S. C. Garg, PhD (University of Delhi), is Professor of Physics at School of Sciences, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi. Earlier he was Pro Vice Chancellor of IGNOU and Founder Director of Centre for Learning and Teaching, National University of Lesotho, Roma, Southern Africa. Before joining IGNOU in 1989, he was with the Department of Physics, Hindu College, University of Delhi for about 12 years. With more than three decades of teaching experience in India and abroad, Prof. Garg has co-authored four textbooks in physics at the undergraduate and Masters levels. He has published several research papers in national and international journals and guided several students for their PhD degree. Having been a member of academic councils and management boards of several universities in the India and abroad, he has wide experience in planning and development of curricula and learning materials for different groups of learners. His areas of research are Theoretical Reactor Physics and Physics Education. R. M. Bansal, PhD (University of Delhi), is Associate Professor, Department of Physics, Hans Raj College, University of Delhi. He has more than three decades of teaching experience and has been a member of several committees tasked to revise physics courses. His areas of research are Theoretical Solid State Physics and Neutron Transport. C. K. Bad Production Quality

The content of the book looks pretty solid. It's just that random words and parts of words are missing. Symbols in equations are missing. Usually you can infer what was supposed to be there, but sometimes not. Its very very annoying. I don't mind McGraw Hill or Amazon selling a defective book at a discount, but they ought to be up front about it. This is a bad production run.

About the Author

Howard Murad, M.D., is a pharmacist and board-certified dermatologist. He is an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California at Los Angeles and was named one of the top four dermatologists in the country by Vogue.

Dr. Murad pioneered many of the advances widely used in skin care and dermatology. In the late 1980s he founded the Murad Skin Research Laboratory and introduced the skin-care industry to over-the-counter alpha hydroxy acid products. At that time, he also opened one of the country's first medically supervised day spas. Since 1992, all Murad products have contained antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. Dr. Murad's discoveries that specific supplement formulas could have dramatic effects on the skin led to the introduction of Internal Skincare® in 1996. Dr. Murad also continues to maintain a private practice in Los Angeles.

Hard to find all the recommended supplements

Book is good and Dr. Murad gives good advice, along with a strong rationale to back it up. However, unless you feel like shelling out $125 a month on supplements from the Murad brand, it is hard to find the supplements.

Buyer Beware!

I bought Dr. Murad's vitamin pack, and followed his regime. After about 21 days, I started to become violently ill about 3 hours after taking the vitamins. Thinking I had the stomach flu, this went on for several days until I realized that the vitamins were actually toxic to my system. Not only was there extreme vomiting, diarrhea, but I became very itchy. Wherever I scratched, I would develop severe bruising! I think Dr. Murad should be very careful prescribing the same amount of vitamins for ALL women. Many factors should be taken into consideration, like weight, health history, etc. By the way, I was in excellent health prior to this regime, just had some cellulite that I wanted to get rid of. The good news is, that I should recover 100%, but there are some long term, permanent effects to vitamin toxicity that all buyers should be aware of.

Does NOT work !!! May be harmful...

The suggestions/solutions in this book do NOT work. I wasted over $250.00 on vitamins and followed the recommended regime for over 3 months (As opposed to the suggested 2 months... to give the program the benefit of the doubt after failing to observe any form of promised results). I am a 5'4, size zero female and I have cellulite in my thighs. After following the program outlined in this book I now have varicose/spider veins which I did NOT have before following the suggestions of this book! As part of the vitamin/supplement regime, this book instructs its user to take antioxidant, biotin and niacin pills. I read an article in Reader's Digest that said these supplements could actually be harmful! It appears the antioxidants may have contributed to giving me varicose veins. Do not make the same mistake I made... go to the gym and build up the muscle in your legs. That may help, but the program in this book certainly will not.

Secrets of Super Achievers

I have enjoyed reading this book. The author essentially illustrates that it is not a chosen group of people who succeed; rather, it is those individuals who make the conscious choice to succeed.

For those readers who are ready to make that choice, this book is worth pursuing.

In a nut shell, the author is a great story teller & a brilliant communicator. He has artfully weaved a tapestry of winning insights with everyday examples, inspiring quotes, vital lessons from Hollywood movies, other people's ideas, & personal anecdotes. At the end, he pares them down to the following fifteen success attributes:

- Character

- Responsibility

- Passion

- Optimism

- Focus

- Endurance

- Abundance Mentality

- Constant Learning

- Contentment

- People Orientation

- Balance

- Discipline

- Self Growth

- Humility

- Courage

I did not realise that the author is the senior minister of Riverview Church, reportedly the largest church on the west coast of Down Under - the land of kangaroos & koala bears. He is also the President of the Australian Council of Churches representing over 250,000 believers. This probably explains the numerous references to Christ & the abundant scripture quotations in the book. No wonder the author often throws in direct hints about the need for an underpinning faith. To me, there is nothing wrong with that, basically. I also did not realise that the publisher is a Christian book publisher.

Frankly speaking, I would have preferred the book to remain secular.

Nevertheless, I find the book easily digestible, even light-weight, yet thought provoking. In fact, I am very impressed by the author's coverage of the subject in terms of breadth & depth. Each success attribute is dealt with in a specific chapter & each chapter is prefaced by a meaningful quote as well as a insightful portrait.

One interesting nugget I picked up from this book, among many others, is the definition of 'Discipline': "a process of scheduling the pain & pleasure of life in such a way as to enhance the pleasure by meeting & experiencing the pain first & getting it over with." I fully concur with the author that this is the best definition of discipline. [In the book, this is attributed to Scott Peck.]

While surfing the author's blog & the publisher's websites, I found out that this book is one of what has been designated as the Achievers' Quartet. The other titles in the quartet includes:

- Attitudes of Amazing Achievers;

- Decisions of Daring Acievers;

- Wisdom of Wealthy Achievers;

I am in the process of acquiring them from amazon & will share my reviews with readers in due course.

I have read a lot of this genre and to be homest most are cliche-laden and pretty lame. Yet 'secrets' is bold, humourous, informative, profound and intelligible.

This is definately a 'once a year read' book.

More a collection of quotes than a compilation of ideas

May be the title of this review seems odd or even sarcastic. However, I am obliged to deter potential readers, especially those who had read over three self help books, from picking this, which, is badly written, disorganised, with too high a proportion of quotes from Winston Churchill and Henry Ford. The minister background of the author just cant help. In short, please give this a pass.

An excellent entry level learning theory book!

I use this book as an introduction to learning theory for a masters class in educational computing technology. Many of my students have never had a learning theory class and this affords them an excellent overview of the subject area. In addition to well-written, concise overviews of many of the more popular theories, the authors provide exercises designed to stimulate classroom instruction. An excellent choice!

Wonderful Book

I looked for many years for this exact book. I use it in my Alexander Technique Teacher Training Class to help people understand how different people might learn. It sparks many wonderful discussions and gives good explanations. It is a great choice for any class in education or people interested in educational theory.
