About the Author
Susie Hodge is an art historian, author and artist with over 80 books published, mainly on art and history. She also writes articles, web resources for museums and galleries, and gives workshops and lectures and schools, universities, museums, galleries, businesses and societies. She has taught in schools and colleges and contributes to radio and TV documentaries. She has an MA the History of Art and is a Fellow of the RSA.

Mmm, I'll Still Not Sold

I had this book on the night stand while I was finishing up Gijs van Hensbergen's book, 'Guernica.' After Picasso's piece was first displayed, one regional leader looked at it and said, "It's awful. A four-year-old could have done that." I glanced over at Hodge's book, looking forward to reading what she has to say on the topic.

In this creative and easy-to-read book, Hodge's uses upwards of 200 pieces of modern art as a reference; from the obscure (at least to me) to more common names such as Dali, Matisse, Warhol, Munch, and even Picasso!

Basically, Hodges devotes two pages to each piece covered. She provides background as to what was happening in the artist's life at the time was piece was created. In some instances, she will expand on how the artist felt about the piece, where it eventually ended up, and what broader influences were in play. In essence, this helps the reader gain a more sophisticated understanding of the artist and the piece created.

In a separate section on the page, Hodge then offers her rationale for why, 'No, your five-year-old [or any other child] could not have done that.' While some of her arguments are playful, she essentially focuses less on what the artist did (smear painting, for example) and more on what message they were trying to communicate. Based on this, she is technically correct (given the cognitive limitations of young children), but it's also somewhat of a reach. Why? Because some of the art portrayed comes across as being a joke (a pile of red, white, and blue candy for example), regardless of what the artist felt or intended.

As an example, a common approach to Hodge's argument is how she discussed Hoch's 'Cut with the Kitchen Knife:'

"...Overcrowded and seemingly nonsensical, this montage looks as if a child has haphazardly stuck down fragments of photographs onto a sheet of paper. However, Hoch was consciously commenting on World War I, sexism, and social and political tensions with Germany..."

So, why didn't I give this book one star? Well, it's because I actually liked it. As my heading to this review suggests, Hodge is pushing it, trying to convince the reader that a child couldn't make some (much?) of the art in this book. Nonetheless, the brief descriptions of each piece are illuminating and the photos in the book are excellent. Hodge was probably being more tongue-in-cheek than she lets on, but she does make good arguments in some instances.

Anyhow, if you love art of any kind, I think you'll like this book. Especially if you run into contemporary art---by choice or because someone insisted you go with them to the gallery/museum---this book will open your eyes to what goes on behind the creation. That, in particular, was helpful for me, because (as you can tell), most contemporary art just doesn't do it for me.

Skeptics can be influenced

I believe that most modern art is simply a clever exercise to extract money from those with too much money and no sense of what makes good art. Having confessed to my bias, I strongly recommend this book.

The author exposed me to new artists and shared her rich understanding of modern art in its historic and artistic context. She shares the often less than obvious message that the artist is attempting to communicate. For example, the author provides the following about Artist's S*** by Piero Manzoni: "The work parodies inflated values of art and also exploits consumerism, particularly the developing preoccupation with packaging and possessions. Meanwhile, the contents of the can represent the ultimate use of waste as an art material." (p. 116-7). I would not be willing to purchase the art priced at the equivalent of its weight in gold, but I can better appreciate the multi-layered message and the creative process that generated the idea for this piece of art.

The most valuable contribution for me was making explicit the implicit assumptions about art that some of the artists are challenging. For example, the author provides the following about the Fountain by Marcel Duchamp: "The most famous provocation of the art world began when the Frenchman Marcel Duchamp bought a standard urinal from a New York hardware store... (W)ith one simple but outrageous act, Duchamp proved that the modern artist is not sovereign, and that institutions such as museums also do much to determine what is art... Duchamp posed other questions about art, among them, what are the characteristics and conditions that define an object as a work of art? Should art appeal primarily to the eye (not primarily to the mind), and should it involve some transformation of materials or can a pre-made object be considered for its merits? (p.102-3)

With more books like this one, perhaps we will all be less judgmental and more appreciative of modern art and the artists who share their messages with us.

Attractive but repetitious!

For each one of a hundred artworks, Deborah Hodge provides a little potted analysis, as well as six more kinds of information stuffed into two over-designed pages. Her point, made over and over again, is that while a child could simply put paint on canvas or arrange items on a gallery floor, the artist is exploring deeper aesthetic, historic, personal, or cultural questions.

A heartwarming, love spreading christmas story!!!

Its christmas at the Nefarious MC and with Darko the club Prez away its up to Black Dog the VP to ensure an amazing time for everyone, the kids, the poor and the elderly and the MC.
With everyone pulling together and working hard and baking goods they are gonna have a hell of a party!
A few problems crop up but thankfully they manage to pull through and give everyone involved a magical christmas to remember... There is also a surprise from Willie for Black Dog and Black Dog has a wonderful gift for Willie.
This book is an amazing christmas novella bringing the love of family and friends and lots of humour together for a magical time of year... Merry Christmas.

This was so funny I loved it the only bad thing I could say about it was it was not long enough. I wanted to keep reading. If you want a fast read that will make you smile and laugh and remember what Christmas is all about then this is for you

An MC Christmas story that captures the spirit and heart of the season.

I really enjoyed reading this one. It was a fun story with some seriousness to it showing how an MC will often step in and help out their community. I just loved the sense of family you take away from this book, shows strongly how family is not always blood. This author managed to capture the spirit and heart of Christmas, engaging your emotions, capturing your attention from the start and had me laughing out loud so many times with some of the antics of the characters in this one. It was great to catch back up with some previous characters and find out what has been happening with them. Made me anticipate her next full book in this series even more after reading this novella and hoping I get to see a lot more of some of these newer characters I got introduced to in this one.

If you are looking for an MC themed Christmas story, a fun and quick read, I would highly recommend one clicking this one. It was just an all around entertaining, and enjoyable, story. This one will positively leave you with the feel goods. This was by far the best MC Christmas story I've read.

Even if the information may not be up to date, the references are a very good source to use to find more current data. But you won't find anything else that contains all the relevant information you need for planning a transportation project in a more comprehensive format than this book.

This a great book!

I used this book for one of my graduate classes. The book is great. It covers many topics in transportation area and provided lots of references for my research. After I graduated and started work in a consulting company, it served as a "Guide Book". In many cases, when i did not know how to solve a problem, I always could find a solution or a reference in this book. Also, I found one of the authors, Sinha, is a member of National Academy of Engineering (NAE). You know, there only a very few NAE members in transportation area.

Well thought out and concise but...

This book is very practical, simple, and useful.

That being said, the production quality of the book seems almost...cheap. I expected the book to at least be in color, but this book is black and white from cover to cover, there are no illustrative or real world examples, no glossary, and the index is only 3 pages.

Also the writing is very dry (boring), and there's just something about the layout that makes it hard to read. I'm working on my second Masters degree so text books are not new to me, but the layout and type-font of this particular text book makes the words just seem to run together on the page.

I really appreciate that this book is online on Google books, the four stars I gave it are a direct result of being able to search through the book online.

I'm a Logistics Major and we're all about making everything as efficient and accessible as possible.

About the Author
Mark Q. Sutton began his career in anthropology in 1968.  While still in high school, he took advantage of the opportunity to participate in archaeological excavations conducted by the local Community College. He went on to earn a BA (1972), an MA (1977), and a Ph.D (1987) in anthropology.  He has worked as an archaeologist for the US Air Force, the US Bureau of Land Management, various private consulting firms, and taught at a number of community colleges and universities.  He taught at California State University, Bakersfield from 1987 to 2007 where he retired as Emeritus Professor of Anthropology.  He now works for Statistical Research, Inc. in San Diego.  Dr. Sutton works on understanding hunter-gatherer adaptations to arid environments but has also investigated entomophagy, prehistoric diet and technology, and optimal foraging theory.  Dr. Sutton has worked at more than 120 sites in North America and has published over 160 books, monographs, and papers on archaeology and anthropology.

A very dry listing of the various aspects of indians ...

A very dry listing of the various aspects of indians in different areas of North America. It could almost be a large chart comparing the similarities of the indian practices, etc. So far (four chapters) it turns out that the indian's anthropology practices are more alike than different.

The war crimes trial of former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic, which began in February, makes this political biography especially timely. Sell is a retired Foreign Service officer who spent two tours of duty (a total of eight years) in Yugoslavia, first in the final years of the Tito presidency and again in the late 1980s, just before the country began to fragment. Here he concentrates on the 14-year period (1987-2001) when Milosevic held high office in Yugoslavia, ending with his arrest and transfer to The Hague. Milosevic is depicted as rising to power without bothering about those he harmed on the way up and, once in power, as gradually losing his grip on reality and spiraling down into a world of delusion. Without dwelling on the horror of the war crimes, the author holds his subject responsible for much of the destruction of his country. Although some of these details have already been covered in Lenard J. Cohen's Serpent in the Bosom and Slavoljub Djuklic and Alex Dubinsky's Milosevic and Markovic, this book is valuable for its background on the current trial and coverage of recent history of a troubled region. My comment from old Europe

Although the facts and the personality of Milosevic are properly described, the book is, in my opinion, too partial. I don't think it is lack of knowledge but the will to believe it that way.
This eternal dichotomy of "good boys and bad boys" that in America is so much extended, appears very strongly in this book, specially when the role of the USA is concerned.Too simple,I must say.
Let's say that it is a good book to be red in America...

Great book

I was lucky enough to take a class with Professor Sell. Naturally, we used many other sources and were encouraged to seek out even more. As part of the history of the area and era I found this book very useful and especially interesting given Professor Sell's first-hand accounts. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone studying the Balkans. I hope he writes another book about his work in Kosovo or, if we're lucky, an account of all his years in the region.

Sobering, Thoughtful Look at Milosevic's Political Career

How does a political hack working for the Yugoslavian Communist party evolve into a skilled manipulator of people, and Europe's worst Fascist politician since Adolf Hitler? In the case of Slobodan Milosevic there are no easy answers, yet former diplomat Louis Sell offers a riveting account of Milosevic's life that depicts the latter's transformation from Communist bureaucrat to a dangerous political demagogue. Along the way Sell provides an in-depth look at the rise and fall of modern Yugoslavia, beginning with the closing phases of World War Two, as Tito's Communist partisans battled both the Nazis and other forces belonging collectively to the Yugoslavian "underground", most notably the Serbian Chetniks. Sell suggests that Milosevic hasn't become a rabid nationalist, but instead, has used the cause of Serbian nationalism to further his own political agenda, granting him virtual control over the rump state of Yugoslavia until his sudden downfall in free elections held after the NATO bombing of Serbia in response to the Serb-Albanian conflict in Kosovo. Sell introduces us to a fascinating group of characters, beginning with Croatian president Tudjman, and ending with the likes of American diplomats and soldiers such as Richard Holbrooke and General Wesley Clark. Unquestionably this may be the best book published yet on what transpired in Yugoslavia during the 1990's.
