This book is well worth the read!

I truly Loved It! The book was really beautiful. The artwork on each page made each poem stand out significantly and the glossy cover of the book looked so much better in my hands. But the poems.... what can I say? All of them were really from the author's heart and each one brought tears to my eyes. The author's bio left you wondering how one woman could go through so much heartache and pain and still be able to write such beautiful poems. I truly hope to read more of this author's work in the future. If you've been down a hard road.. this book will certainly lift your spirit. Anything that can erupt such true emotions is well worth the read!

This book illustrates with perfect clarity a life well lived but fraught with heartache. Though the journey through may be emotionally scalding and raw, the poems contained here are of the bravest sort; that which holds nothing if not the utmost hope for the future and enduring faith in the love and guidance of something greater. These words are necessary to bring light to the darkest paths of our own ruminations, our own losses and serves as a guidepost for the way out. These kinds of stories are essential in today's world, and speak to the best parts of our own human nature... an excellent read.

About the Author

Richard Robbins received his Ph.D. in anthropology from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has spent his entire teaching career at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.  Some of his most formative academic experiences include field research among Cree, Inuit and Naskapi First Nations peoples of Canada, Acadian farmers and fisherfolk in New Brunswick, Canada, and among religious communal societies in the United States.  A research semester at the Science Studies Unit at the University of Edinburgh would count as one of his most stimulating intellectual experiences. 

 

He has received the State University of New York’s Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the American Anthropological Association/McGraw-Hill Teacher of the Year Award.  He appeared also in the hit anti-globalization documentary, The Yes Men.  He is currently SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor at Plattsburgh, and maintains a global problems website at www.plattsburgh.edu/legacy and a general website at faculty.plattsburgh.edu/richard.robbins.  He can be contacted by email at richard.robbins@plattsburgh.edu.

Great textbook!

At last: a textbook which confronts the cultural power of capitalism. Robbins looks at how capitalism shapes cultures and how it has evolved into the most powerful cultural influence on the planet. A great resource for anthropology, geography, or history. Not your run of the mill textbook, it offers forceful critiques and compelling history. An excellent book for college students.

way overpriced but worth reading

I've given this three stars simply because it would have to be astounding good to be worth $77, and it's not. It is very good however, and if the price was more like $20 of less, which would be reasonable for an oversized paperback, I would have given it 5 stars. Evidently, because it's a textbook the publisher can get away with this. However, I happened to find a used copy at a college bookstore, and felt I should get it because I have been wanting to better understand globalism, CAFTA, NAFTA, the WTO and the protests against it, the World Bank and how it both helps and interferes, the jobs that are being outsourced to Asia (btw, last time I spoke to Amazon customer service, it was with someone in India!), the seemingly endless reach and power of certain multi-national corporations, etc., and I thought this book would fit the bill. I haven't finished it yet, but it certainly does, and I've been learning a lot from reading it. Thought it definitely has a point of view, I feel it's a more balanced introductory book than the many highly opinionated books written by particular economists and think-tankers who are inevitably trying to persuade rather than educate.

I am a high school economics teacher. This book clearly presents some of the complicated problems unregulated free market capitalism has created. I have used it as a resource in several classroom activities as a balance to the oversimplified perspective high school textbooks provide (which are themselves part of a market dominated by a few gigantic publishers who refuse to produce a product that would critique the very paradigm that they operate within).

Fantastic Read

Honestly, I chose “The Feathered Bone” because it was one of the choices that was still offered as a “real life, hold in my hand, tangible” book. After reading through the first few pages, I wondered if I would like this story because I felt that the author’s descriptions of the surroundings and goings-on bogged down the tale. But, I muscled through. And I am glad I did.
“The Feathered Bone” addresses a few of the tragic issues facing our Country today. One of those is the atrocity of human trafficking. The author weaves together a story that prompts the reader to sit on the edge of his seat. But, it’s not a story for the faint of heart.
The horror of human trafficking coupled with an unexpected tragedy, brought tears to my eyes. In fact, at one point I laid the book aside to pick up a few groceries at the store. As I pushed the cart up and down the aisles, I hoped the scene I left was only a horrific nightmare. Yes, the author did that good of story telling to draw me in.
I look forward to reading other books by Julie Cantrell.

Read this entire novel in two sittings - it's a beautiful tribute to love, loss, and faith. Cantrell is indeed on her best game with this new novel. The descriptions of New Orleans are lovely and spot-on, as well! Highly recommend.

The Feathered Bone Holds you right from page one. Love New Orleans and Julie captures the drama, mystery and flavor of New Orleans. The drama builds and becomes more intense with each page. Easy to read and follow, not convoluted with too many characters or places. VERY spell binding as is New Orleans. Characters you can relate to, places you can 'see', and a story you wont forget. Love you Julie!
