beautiful, heartrending biographies of the forgetten

Ministry at the Margins captures ten years of the experiences and lessons learned by Dr. Barry Wade during his ministry among the Jamaican poor. The book’s weight is toward an honest telling of the tragic, marvelous lives of society’s oppressed, forgotten and excluded. The complexities of their lives and the world that has shaped their circumstances are faced honestly, even when stories lack a happy ending. Wade proceeds from these accounts to illuminate a few key principles for serving the marginalized. His long suffering, dignifying manner models the kind of servant-hearted love that we in the church far too often lack.

Wade offers the best rationale for listening as the fundamental task of ministry that I have heard. His emphasis reflects God’s own listening posture, “I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering” (Ex 3:7). He correctly identifies that the Church’s chronic failure to listen to the heart language of the marginalized results in energies spent “ministering to perceived needs of the poor rather than to their real needs for which they reach out to us” (211). Wade’s effectiveness comes from his remarkably nonjudgmental posture. He encounters all manner of “sinners,” yet his concern is always first and foremost for the safety and well-being of the people under his care people--regardless of the “morality” of their situation. This, to me, is the appropriate posture of love. I was staggered by his stories of women’s in particular. Wade witnesses the extreme danger posed to society’s most vulnerable: the young, the old, the mentally handicapped, women, the uneducated. They are a reminder that shalom does not exist until it is experience by these demographics: "'Old men and old women will again sit in the streets of Jerusalem...the streets of the city will be filled with boys and girls playing in its streets'” (Zech 8:4-5).

HELP Ministries’ (Wade's nonprofit in Kingston, Jamaica) strategies were mostly limited to approaches at the traditional charity and personal development scale. Though this is not ideal, this book is intended less as a strategic guide for social transformation than it as a window into the lives of the poor and the character needed for Christlike service among them.

Great and highly effective decision method!

I have found the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to be one of the best, intriguing, and certainly fairly easy to communicate method to aid me on multi-criteria multi-objectives decision problems.
The book contains a wealth of examples from some decades (!) of practical experiences with AHP.
The book presents some "rules of thumb" (read: approximate methods) to estimate the final "priority vectors" ranking and sorting out the different alternatives to be decided, but will give the mathematically inclined reader a thorough (read: tough, at least college level in linear algebra!) introduction into the inner workings of Eigenvalue computation for priority matrices.
And I definitely appreciate the *original* comments of the founder of AHP to any other's comments on the subject.

Must Read for Doctors Looking for a Different Way

Rarely do physicians give up their keys to the "Doctor's Lounge" and descend into the trenches where patients hide out to heal from their illnesses and wounds - out of sight of the medical establishments charged to care for them. Dr. Ken Hamilton is one such physician. He gathered a group of patients who needed what was not being provided: support and a different way to heal when left with partial or no solutions from the medical world. And he did something remarkable. He "entered into relationship" with these patients. Together they created a model for a support group called H.O.P.E., and they now walk a common road together - a road called "healing."
I'm torn between recommending this as a book for patients or as a must read for doctors. Here's why. In this day, when malpractice insurers consistently tell physicians that the single most important thing they can do to stem the tide of lawsuits is to "improve their relationships with their patients," these physicians might do well to look to Hamilton as an example. Not all surgeons should sheath their scalpels as Hamilton did in order to participate more directly with patients in the healing process, nor would we expect them to. But every physician must weigh what "medicine" has cost him or her in terms of estrangement from patients they were once committed to serve, and the loss of a sense of Soul in medicine. They must balance it with whatever "gains" make it worth five minute blitz appointments. Perhaps they are caught between a high maintenance personal lifestyle and healthcare reimbursement systems that are strangling all of us - physician and patient alike.
So if you are a physician reading this review and are no longer satisfied with where you find yourself and your patients today, take the time to read "SoulCircling" by Hamilton. Suspend your judgments that your way is the only way and follow one physician's story and his results in truly partnering with patients. Meet your patients as people in the place called Soul. Beginner or Advanced will love this

This fake book is great for a beginner or the advanced player. All the songs are written in c which makes it easy for the beginner, but for anyone advanced they can all be transposed easily. The songs are great classics. I had heard almost every one. BUY THIS BOOK if you love gospel music.

Great for the Gospel "faker"

The first so-called reviewer decided to give this one star without having ever seen it. The same person is apparently incapable of reading the content description in which a number of the song titles are given. This book is available all over the Internet with exhaustive details, and does not deserve being relegated to one-star status. An excellent resource for those, like me, with more interest than technical musical skill.

I love this book because I can finally play the piano. It actually sounds like I know what I'm doing. The book is super simple and filled with lots of great old gospel songs.
