Chicken Every Sunday - My Life With Mother's Boarders, by Rosemary Taylor

This novel looks at life through the eyes of the children of the house. The characters are situated in an Arizona boarding house, where many people go to the desert for the 'cure' of what ails them. The characters are more than a bit eccentric and very individual; Mother copes with everything, including having a husband that it seems, is just one more child; and, the children grow up secure in the knowledge that their Mother's chicken is sought after even it getting it to the table can be difficult. Very funny.

Wow! You owe yourself a treat. Read it!
By Thomas Leo Ogren
Chicken Every Sunday, by Rosemary Taylor...ah, what a rare find! I found an old, very beat up copy of this out in the garage after my mom died. I read a few pages and was instantly hooked.
It all takes place in the roaring boom days of Tuscon, Arizona, back around 1900. The author's mom, always looking to make an extra buck, rents out rooms to boarders, and these people each have their own amazing story.
The story telling here is first class, as good as it gets. You come to love and care about so many different crazy characters in this gem of a book. I liked this book so much that as soon as I'd finished it, I got on Amazon.com and bought three very nice old used copies of it, to give to good friends. In some ways it reminds me a bit of another wonderful old book I once found in a trash can while out on a walk: The Egg and I. Like it, both of these are old, funny, wild, crazy, just totally marvelous reads that well deserve to be passed down, hand to hand, to the next generations.
I only review books I really like, and Chicken Every Sunday, I can't say enough about it. I might add, that we can learn much from this fine, fun read, too....the family here is so flexible, so filled with fun, joy, and love...and they're such prime examples of making the best of things, of looking on the bright side, on not being caught up in the small things.
Read it; you'll love it!

Lovely Story
By K. McDowell
Since I live in Tucson and actually met one of the little boys as an older man (only once), I have a closer connection to the story. It is just delightful.

Recommended for ALL Tucsonans!
By Sharon Sherrill
I grew up in Tucson and have seen it change SO much since I was a kid in the '60s and '70s. I first read this book as a teenager and loved it then, learning about the early days and early "settlers." I enjoyed especially when the author spoke of certain streets and neighborhoods which I recognized. We have many "Drachmans" (the family Rosemary Taylor came from) to this day in Tucson, both people and street/business names; the legacy lives on. I re-aquired a copy of the book a couple years ago and was amazed at how MUCH more Tucson has grown and changed since I last read it. I love this book, not only for the funny stories of an eccentric family and quirky boarders, but as I said, for glimpses of the town I grew up in and continue to live in, and love.
