Wonderful story and overview of gifted children!

Giftedness seems to be such a "desirable" characteristic amongst the general population, something that many parents hope for in their offsprings, thinking that it must be great to have a child who easily aces all the subjects and grows up to wealth and fame. In actual fact, it is one of the least understood aspects of a child's development. It is amazing that so few parents and even educators actually know about the characteristics of giftedness (with possibly the exception of child prodigies), how to recognize it in children, and how to deal with such children on a daily basis.

This chasm of information is handled wonderfully in a kind, insightful manner by "Orientation (The School for Gifted Potentials)". Although a work of fiction (and great fiction with a fun storyline that made me read it in one sitting, now wondering what will happen to the protagonists in the next book!), it masterfully and I think accurately presents an overview of the "over-exciteabilities" that are characteristics of many gifted children. It explains why many gifted children may actually SUFFER rather than thrive in the regular educational system, and why they may be in constant painful confrontations with authority figures in their lives who are unable to comprehend their behavior or motivations, including their own loving parents!

As a mother who was shocked by her son's unexpected elementary school woes, it has been a trying and frankly lonely road looking for answers. Why was he not able to fit in? Why were none of the people at the local public school able to help? Why was my son, behaving and performing more than well all through 3 years of kindergarten, now suddenly the subject of almost daily tirades and punishments by his teacher, who even suggested that he be prescribed an ADHD drug! The "experienced" educators' views colored our own eye lenses for our child too, so that for a long, long time we also saw him in a negative light, wondering why he (and now his younger siblings) could not simply act like other children his age (if there is such a standard).

Now these woes can be explained to a great extent by the over-exciteabilities. There are many references available in the public arena explaining these characteristics of gifted children, but I think the author's spin on things, turning such information into a novel with specific characters in "The School for Gifted Potentials", made the existing information much clearer and easier to relate to for readers. I hope that through this book, the general population can begin to understand that "gifted children" (and gifted adults) are not just a set of faraway statistics that describe some elite sector of society, but are actually simply children with very real daily trials, pains, needs and feelings (which are of course magnified by their emotional over-exciteability!).

Promising start - and badly needed

As a teacher who works with gifted children, I was intrigued when I read a review of this book. It has great potential to help gifted children learn more about what being gifted means. I am reading it first myself before I decide whether it will be useful to recommend to some of the gifted children that I work with. I haven't finished it yet - I'm about 40% of the way through - but I decided to come on here to see whether any other reviewers had mentioned the excessive amount of typographical errors. As a book that is marketed to gifted children, it is just not acceptable to contain so many errors. A simple proof-read would have picked them up. There are instances of mixing up homophones, like 'here' and 'hear', sentences that are missing words, and one instance where the word 'commiserate' was used, when the context clearly indicated that the word should have been 'commensurate'.

I recommend finding a gifted child to proof-read the next edition. The number of errors is really affecting my enjoyment of this book.

Helpful book

Once I started this book, I wanted to keep reading. This book helped me understand who I am and my qualities. I understand now why I have vivid dreams and embellish stories. I also get why I can picture my future so well. It was a fun read and did not seem just like a non-fiction text book. The characters were dynamic, the pace was good, and was the right length.

I can't wait for the sequel!

Enjoyable for niche readers

Let me start by saying that you'll probably only be able to wrap your mind around this book if you're "into" adult braces/orthodontics. And by adult, I do mean ADULT. This is a sex-oriented story about a young woman who has braces. This obviously appeals to a small niche of predominately male readers.

Like one of Aimes's other adult-themed braces books, "Love and Braces," this story goes heavy on the embarrassment of wearing braces as an adult, and how men supposedly look at an adult woman with braces as some sort of horribly (if temporarily) disfigured object of pity. The plus side of this attitude is that it allows Aimes to have the characters talk about braces and orthodontic treatment pretty extensively, rather than just narrating their thoughts. This is enjoyable - I suspect that those who are "into" adult braces are mostly starved for conversations about them - since it allows the reader to imagine himself inserted into that conversation.

"Bracing Times with Cecilia" moves quickly from a purely braces-driven story into some light sadomasochism and bondage. I thought this was nicely done, though it is pretty tame compared to some things I've seen and read on the internet. The insight into Cecilia's attraction to bondage is interesting, if a bit farfetched (hey, it's fantasy). The story eventually winds its way back to being braces-driven, as Cecilia makes some extraordinary demands on her boyfriend.

While Cecilia's braces are central to the story itself, the book doesn't focus on braces as sexualized objects. In that regard, it may somewhat disappoint people who fetishize orthodontic braces, of whom there are a surprising number. The most graphic the author gets regarding braces in a sexual fashion is Roger (Cecilia's boyfriend) mentioning he can feel sharp edges when he kisses Cecilia, and an almost offhand mention of Cecilia wearing elastic bands on her braces during oral sex. In essence, this is a sex-oriented book where the braces are part of the main character, but not at all central to the sex she has in the story.

The story's detour into Cecilia's strong interest in working in orthodontics as a career was the best part of the book to me. The author manages to touch on several things about braces through Cecilia's passion for orthodontia that really made me recognize myself in the story. It's as if Aimes was channeling some of my thoughts as she wrote, and I could look at a few passages and think, "Yes! That's exactly how I feel about it!" It's an odd feeling to recognize one's own thoughts so clearly in a work of fiction, but also very pleasant.

Lastly, much like "Love and Braces," the self-published author could use a good copy editor. There are a number of typos in the book - actually a surprising number, given its brevity - and there are a few places where the sentence structure makes things a little confusing. It's certainly not a huge distraction, but it's occasionally a bit annoying.

Overall, I enjoyed this short book a good deal. Enough, in fact, that I read it twice. I've also given it to my wife to read, not because she necessarily shares my interest, but so she can understand me a little better.

About the Author

ELIZABETH F. BARKLEY is professor of music at Foothill College in Los Altos, California. She is a nationally known scholar, educator, and consultant and has been the recipient of several honors, including The Chair Academy's Outstanding Leadership Award for work with learning outcomes assessment and being named California's Higher Education Professor of the Year by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Comprehensive and Useful

Research on effective teaching at the college and university level emphasizes the following components says this book:

"1. Identify and communicating clear learning goals and outcomes
2. Helping students achieve these goals through activities that promote active, engaged learning
3. Analyzing, reporting, and reflecting upon results in ways that lead to continued improvement"

This book outlines 50 Learning Assessment Techniques which allows faculty to assess the effectiveness of their teaching. These techniques are identified for traditional, online, collaborative, and flipped classes and classroom. A professor can get ideas on assessment techniques which may work best for the kind of classroom he or she teaches.

For example, one technique I liked for an economics classroom - which my son teaches at a liberal arts college - was a creative Nomination assignment. Students research the Nobel Economics prize criteria, do research on outstanding Economists, and write a profile on the Economist describing why that Economist would qualify for the prize. Could work for other disciplines, too, such as medicine. This assignment was under the "human dimension" category.

This book describes 50 techniques such as this.

Chapter 4 explains how to implement Learning Assessment Techniques, creating assessment rubrics, student and peer evaluation forms and introducing the activity, facilitating, concluding it and other helpful processes. This is really a how-to manual guiding faculty step-by-step in a very organized fashion on how to use these techniques successfully.

Chapter 5 covers analyzing and reporting on what students have learned.

Part Two of this book highlights teaching and assessing for different domains. These domains include: foundational knowledge, application learning, integration, human dimension, caring and learning how to learn domains. Each domain gets its own chapter and covers clarifying learning goals, identifying learning outcomes, aligning learning outcomes and assessing achievement. Then about seven learning assessment techniques are provided for each domain.

For the learning how to learn domain, some sample LAT's include: study outlines, student generated rubrics, invent the quiz, learning goal listing, What? So what? Now What? Journal, Multiple Task Mastery Checklist and Personal Learning Environment. Each chapter is about 40 pages long so is packed with information in this section.

This is an invaluable resource for professors who want to improve engagement, assessment, learning outcomes and reporting for evaluations and even tenure. Assessments are one of the primary ways students learn, so having quality and accurate assessments is imperative. This book has abundant ideas on how to create these for all kinds of teaching styles, objectives and classrooms.

Any professor would find the information useful. It is clearly organized and comprehensive in its explanations in how to implement these Learning Assessment Techniques. I am going to give this to my son for his college teaching.

Interesting Resources for Assessing Learning and Promoting Engagement for Student Learning

As a faculty for many years, I am always looking for resources related to assessment and evaluation. I teach a master's level course on this very topic and so good resources for not only helping students but informing my own educational practice is essential. I have said this before in other reviews, but Jossey-Bass is a leading publisher of educational products (I not only use them now as an educator but when I was getting my doctorate, I used a lot of resources from this particular publisher. This resource has a lot of useful charts and examples. There are also a lot of online resources that can be accessed as well besides those in the hardcopy book. There are concepts maps and rubrics, as well as information on the specific learning domains which include knowledge, application, integration, and even the caring domain (which I have to say is a new concept to me but is quite interesting since I teach nursing - a caring curriculum). There is a lot of interesting ideas including assessment and promotion of learning, implementation strategies, and information on how to collect data on student assessment and evaluation that can be used as support for showing positive outcomes that might actually be helpful to the educator for annual professional summaries (yearly performance evaluations) and promotions or tenures. While I am a fan of CATS (classroom assessment activities), this book is more about engagement as well as assessment.

Tad DeWree (Dallas, Texas) is an award-wining ad creative and principal of Essential Branding, a Dallas-based consulting firm which provides communications and marketing solutions for national brands and owner-centric businesses. Over his career, he has helped add over $1 Billion value to its roster of national clients and private ventures. Prior to consulting, Tad spent ten years on Madison Ave as an award-winning creative, producing work for American Airlines, Burger King, Canon, and other Fortune 100 companies while working at some of the World's largest advertising agencies. Mr. DeWree is a 1984 graduate of the College of Communication at The University of Texas at Austin.

Great ideas, boiled down to the essence

I was surprised to find that this book was a collection of ideas with little elaboration. However, the ideas are classic and mostly self-explanatory.

This is a short book that should be read repeatedly. The author has spent a lifetime in advertising and marketing and knows what matters most.

Even the strongest brands need ongoing work and fine tuning. Mr. DeWree's 50 Essential Rules of Great Branding is an effective, practical and handy brand building guide. The power behind this book is in its beautiful simplicity. This book is a fresh departure from the many books on marketing plans and branding that are cumbersome and lengthy thus not regularly used. This book can be used as a powerful daily reference guide to new ideas and inspiration to build any brand and business.

Best crash course on branding. Ever.

Even if you are a slow reader, your coffee will most likely stay hot while you consume this gem. It will not turn you into a branding expert, but may either inspire you to knuckle down and become one, or at least you will recognise and appreciate the real McCoy from now on. The book is only for smart cookies with elegant tastes, of course.
