An Excellent Resource for Investigators

I met the author of this book, Steve Chancellor, some years ago in his sexual assault training class for criminal investigators. It was by far the best law enforcement class I've ever attended. (And I've been to a lot of them.)

This book is like that class: well-presented and very useful. Thanks to a long stellar career as an Army and state investigator, Chancellor knows his stuff.

He's also an excellent writer. The case studies presented here are both gripping and informative.

I now work for a district attorney. The sexual assault prosecutors in my office have stopped borrowing my copy of Investigating Sexual Assault Cases and ordered their own. Anyone dealing with these sort of crimes will want to do likewise.

Very Useful and Informative Book

After reading the Death Investigations book authored by Dr. James Adcock and co-authored by Arthur Chancellor, I was looking forward to reading Mr. Chancellor's new book on Investigating Sexual Assault Cases. When it was finally published and I ordered it, I was not disappointed. Having investigated dozens and dozens of sexual assaults, quite frankly, I figured that it woukd be an interesting read but I wasn't entirely sure that I would learn much new. However, I was pleasantly surprised. This book is an excellent resource and I learned literally dozens of new approaches and ideas that I had never thought of or been taught despite my extensive study on the subject. Criminal investigators of any experince level who conduct sexual assault investigations will benefit greatly from this book and will become better, more competent investigators. This book was well worth the money and should be required reading for anyone investigating sexual assaults.

About the Author

Sung Chul Cha is a Senior Research Engineer at the Hyundai Motor Group, Automotive, Research and Development Division, in Hwaseong, Korea. He received his Diploma of Engineering (1998) and a Doctor of Engineering degree (2001) in Georesources and Materials Engineering from RWTH Aachen, Germany. In 2002 he became a research associate and postdoc at the Department of Interface Chemistry and Surface Engineering at the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research (MPIE), Düsseldorf, Germany, and continued his research in the field of high temperature materials and reactions including coating technology. In 2005 he began work in the area of materials engineering and material properties at Siemens Power Generation, Mülheim a.d. Ruhr, Germany. Since 2007 he has been employed at the Hyundai Motor Group and responsible for the development of automotive materials. Dr. Cha has published over 20 scientific papers and holds more than 30 international patents. He was a keynote speaker, chair, and reviewer of the session on “Coated Materials” (2014) and a reviewer and chair of the session “Automotive Tribology” (2013) at the SAE World Congress & Exhibition and he was an invited keynote speaker for the SVC 2014 Conference.

Ali Erdemir is an Argonne Distinguished Fellow and Senior Scientist with international recognition and significant accomplishments in the fields of materials science, surface engineering and tribology. He received his B.S. degree from Istanbul Technical University in 1977 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1982 and 1986, respectively. His discoveries of nearly frictionless carbon and superhard nanocomposite coatings, as well as a range of novel nanolubricants and lubrication additives, have been hailed as major breakthroughs in the field. Erdemir has received numerous awards, including five R&D 100 Awards; holds 16 U.S. patents; and has published more than 290 papers, 18 invited book and handbook chapters, and two edited books. He is a Fellow of ASME, STLE, AVS, and ASM-International.

Wondering about authenticity

I am from the four corners area and am wondering about how much research Scott C'Dell did for this book? I have never heard of mesquite growing around here or aspen in Canyon de Chelly or of the pueblo people eating dog meat and...... the owl a GOOD OMEN? I don't think so!!!! Any one from this area that has any knowledge of the Navajo culture knows that OWLS ARE NOT GOOD OMENS!!! I am reading this book with my class and am so frustrated by the fact that such a good author would be so negligent. The other students don't seem to notice the problems that I have with the book, except of course the Navajo students. I was happy to see the reviews from children who agree with what I was thinking. I am an adult student.

What it's like to be a Navaho girl

The book I read was called Sing Down the Moon. It is about a Navaho girl named Bright Morning. She tells about all the adventures she has had. She tells about when slave traders captured her and what she does. I learned about Navaho life and how the United States soldiers treated Navaho people. The soldiers forced the Navaho people out of their canyon and forced them to walk to Fort Sumner. I liked the book very much. I liked hearing what life was like for the Navahos in the 1860's from the point of view of a girl close to my age. It was very exciting. There was a lot of action. I especially liked the part where Bright Morning and her husband Tall Boy escape the Long Knives. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Navaho history and likes an exciting adventure story.

The Navaho Trail of Tears

One morning, while Navaho fourteen year old Bright Morning and her friend Running Bird are out in the fields of their home, Canyon de Chelly, tending sheep, they see strange men approaching. Before they can stop it, Bright Morning is kidnapped by the men, who turn out to be Spanish Slave-holders, and take her to a South-Western town, dominantly Mexican. She is sold as a slave to a Spanish speaking family, where she meets another slave, who can speak her language. Bright Morning tries desperately to find a way to get back to her people. The other slave imprisoned with her tells her the way, and Bright Morning is able to make a narrow escape back to her people. But when she returns, she finds her village under occupation of the "Long Knives", or American soldiers. After she is forsed into an arranged marriage with another Indian, Tall Boy, the Long Knives push the Navaho out of their land- and onto one of the most memorable events in American history- the Trail of Tears. Many all around her suffer and eventually die as they continue to walk on.

A very well written story, and very informative.

Pretend by Jennifer Plecas is a wonderful story book about the wonder of imagination as well as a gentle reminder that parents need to play with their kids on their kids level. Children play and pretend all day as a method of learning as well as for the pure enjoyment of it. It's sad that so few parents (adults) allow themselves to pretend and thus lose the essence of our younger selves.

The reading level is 1st-2nd grade and the illustrations are soft, colorful, and child-like. This book has a vibe of simplicity and purity that elevates it from the rest of the competition for your money. Considering I got it at a budget overstock store (Ollie's) for about three bucks, the value is tremendous.

Put down the video control, the remote, the electronic device, turn the living room into a fantasy setting, and spend some true quality time with your child(ren). In case you forgot how to, this book is your manual. Highly recommended.

This is a book a parent should read with their child. The child would love it, and it could lead the parent into remembering they need to let go and pretend once in a while. Parent and child would create memories for a lifetime. Parents need to think about what children remember most about their childhood. Did Dad or Mom play with them and pretend, or did they work all the time to get the "toys" the family thought they couldn't live without? Read this book to remember what is amazing about pretent. Great book to give new fathers and fathers that may need a gentle reminder what DADS do.

Pretend to perfection

This book is fantastic! The story of a boy wanting his dad to play with him and then the process of bringing dad out of dad's adult reality and into fantasy! I picked it up by chance in another brick and mortar bookstore, and was immediately taken in by it's sweet and adventurous spirit. The illustrations work wonderfully with the text. My 2 year old will be getting this book for Christmas this year!
