We have therefore invited experts ranging from experimental and theoretical physicists to pure and applied mathematicians to contribute articles for this book. While the skeleton of the book deals with superconductivity,micron- works and generalizations of the Little–Parks situation,there are also articles which deal with applications of the Ginzburg–Landau formalism to several fundamental topics,such as quantum coherence,cosmology,and questions in materials science.

Apartment 3

I first read this book to my daughter when she was 4-years-old. The New York tenement setting was such a foreign world in contrast to her suburban Dallas upbringing that she was immediately enthralled with the fact that so many families of diverse ethnic backgrounds would all live in one building. Keats paints such a vivid word picture that a child as young as she could easily be drawn into the story line. The characters and events became real to her, to the extent that she could literally hear the harmonica playing. My daughter begged to revisit this story and consequently every trip to the library for the next year included Apartment 3. To this day, at age 29 and expecting her first child, she still recalls this book and wants a copy of her own.

Beautiful imagery and great for kids

I am a teacher and this is one of my favorite books to read to my kids. The story is about Sam, a kid in an apartment building in a city on a rainy day. He observes all the sounds he hears but he is enchanted with the sound of music coming from one of the apartments. He and his brother set off to find the source of the sound. When he finally finds it, the vivid imagery is magical. When the man plays the music, Sam says, "He played purples and grays and rain and smoke and the sounds of night." Gorgeous.

Forever Relevant

Written in 1971, Ezra Jack Keats APT. 3 is one of many books penned by the esteemed author. As a preschool teacher, I have been reading Keats’ books to my students for 25 years. Beholden in his stories are concepts waiting to be brought to life by the reader; lessons that beg the creative application by teachers and parents alike.
In APT. 3, young brothers Sam and Ben follow their curiosity from floor to floor and door to door throughout their apartment building. They explore, in search of the origin of the music that they have heard. Their investigation eventually leads them to the dark apartment of a blind neighbor who goads them into coming in, and closing the door behind them.
When he wrote APT. 3, Ezra Jack Keats intention was undoubtedly, to foster the values that contemporarily we have come to understand as diversity, acceptance, and respect for human differences. Most of us strive, with intention, to instill these values in children. We often teach them simply by precept and example. Keats recognized the need for such teaching.
For this teacher, presently the most opportune lesson that APT. 3 provides is in the examination of the perilous risks that the young boys take. In writing APT. 3, Keats unknowingly created a realistic scenario that we can frighteningly identify with, in regards to the vulnerability of children. The world in which we presently live, demands that we teach children never to put themselves within reach of such dangers. It is our responsibility to teach children the lessons of self preservation.
I began my lesson by reading APT. 3 in its entirety to my class. I followed up with questions about what the boys experienced as they moved through the halls of their building. Were the sights, sounds, smells good or bad? I asked students if they thought the boys were at all frightened. My intention was to focus on the issue of safety, and I asked if anyone thought that the boys did anything that was dangerous. Then, I revisited the book. I paraphrased the story up to the point where Sam and Ben were caught peeking into the blind man’s door. A lengthy discussion about safety followed. I talked with my students about the fact that the brothers entered their neighbors’ apartment without their mother or father. I told my students that they should never do that.
Role play came next. I taught my students that if another person is trying to hurt them, grab them, or trick them into doing something that is unsafe, that they must get away. We role played fighting back. I taught my students it is okay to fight back if someone is trying to take them away. We practiced screaming, hitting, kicking, and biting. I taught my students that they must scream as loud as they can, hit, kick, and bite until they are free.
APT.3 provides the perfect opportunity to teach children about self preservation. However unintended, Keats presents us with a concept that is often difficult to approach. I will continue to revisit APT.3 with my students, and to recommend it to others for the same purpose.

What is the business value of IT? This is a perennial question that dominates executive discussions. Many have sought to answer this question with fancy algorithms, consulting practices, benchmark data and other tools. However, the question is basic to IT so it should have a basic answer - right? The Real Business of IT is a clear and focused look at the issue of IT value and the approaches to capture, communicate and increase that value. This book is unique in several respects. It is a book written for CIOs largely based on the experience of CIOs.

The book features extended practices from leading companies like McKesson, Intel, Freescale, Deltak and many others. Building on those sources, Hunter and Westerman explain a simple virtuous cycle for driving IT value. They illustrate this cycle with about a dozen concepts that CIOs can use tomorrow to change the way they talk about value.

Hunter and Westerman make good use of these resources creating a book that is filled accessible information. One of the ways they do this is through using analogies from outside of IT. This not only makes the ideas easy to understand but also it gives the CIOs stories that they can use to inform and educate their business peers about IT.

This book helps CIOs avoid common value traps that limit the view of IT's value in the enterprise. It then goes on to build the tools and techniques to demonstrate the value for money in IT, how IT helps run, grow and transform the enterprise, manage IT's unit costs, and other key concepts.

The book is tuned and intended for CIOs and IT executives, rather than business executives. This is not to say business executives should not read this book, its just that it is not written for them. By focusing on CIOs, the authors avoid much of the complexity found in other books. This should be taken as a strength since that focus enables the authors to clearly provide practices and tools that CIOs can use.

The business value of IT sits in the conversations within your enterprise not in compliance with some industry standard. Therefore, I would suggest that CIOs use this book with their teams to build that conversation, in their terms and their situation.

This book is highly recommended for CIOs and IT executives all of whom will face the need to answer questions about the value of IT. In this book, CIOs will learn directly from the authors as well as the insights of leading CIOs and their examples. This is a powerful combination that makes the investment in The Real Business of IT a good value.

Business executives often express value in terms of financial measures and terms. While the book advises CIOs to focus on business performance, it could have done with some expanded financial content.

The latter chapters that discuss BPR and organizations change cover them in a traditional way. This reinforces the importance of creating value beyond more than just IT.

Useful and Practical Advice but very Verbose

Approach suggested by Authors is basic commonsense, but definitely relevant, useful and practical, which many people miss out. However this could have been articulated in just a few dozen pages, perhaps as a main article in a magazine rather than a 200 page long book. Result is verbose text, with plenty of repetition and many needless references to what contemporary CIOs, CxOs told the authors or in magazine interviews. What would have helped is giving a set of structured/concrete Checklists/Benchmarks either directly or in the case studies to supplement the suggested value creation 'framework'.

Best IT book I ever read

How do we fix IT's problems? Well, Hunter and Westerman gave us the answer: pick up more work! Yes, and it actually does make sense. Be responsible for MORE things and your success rate will increase.

This book is about how to really deliver value from IT. It is based on changing IT's mindset. You've probably read much on this topic before, but this book sums it all up and more. And it does have suggestions that can be readily applied.

Every manager in IT should read this book!

A lovely slide from acquaintances, to friends, to lovers.

I am a sucker for a good Christmas story. So when I saw that the next "Bad Boy" book in the Second Chance series was Christmas themed, I did a little cheer. Add in the fact that this one is all about Connor, that hunky landscape artist from the last book and *fanning self* whoo boy, let's get started!

I remember Connor from the last book as being pretty easy going and doing gentle flirting and teasing. He brings that to this book, but now we get to see his depths too. As an army veteran, he carries some emotional scars from his time overseas. While Faith is in danger, he gently but firmly steps in and starts handling things. Since the two of them both have a betrayal in their past, they click on many levels and while they spend time together, they really get to know each other better. There is no insta love going on here. Just a lovely slide from acquaintances, to friends, to lovers.

Faith currently works with Sophie, from Rescuing the Bad Boy. Several times during that book and this one, comments are made about her being "model" beautiful, being tall, slim and pretty. It's hard to imagine a woman like that having body issues, but it can happen to the best of us. The way Connor handled her issues was just right and is a gentle reminder to us all that everyone can have body image issues.

Both Connor and Faith came to this relationship with baggage. It was their ability to assist each other with the issues that were weighing each other down that really spoke to me. Connor showed Faith that she could depend and lean on him and Faith showed Conner that he was loved and had a life ahead of him. They complemented each other so nicely. I couldn't help but give a happy sigh with the news in the epilogue; I do so love a happy ending. This was another 5 star read in the series.

I must confess when I read the title I thought I might be reading fluff, but Jessica Lemmon has written a story with honest characters, emotions and great friendship. I was truly surprised at how much I enjoyed her writing. I have not read any of the other Bad Boy books so could not base my judgement on those.

A Bad Boy for Christmas gave me everything I like in a romance and more. Conner by far was my favorite being ex-military, super protective, considerate, and sweet as well as being sexy. Faith is reeling after finding out her Ex was cheating on her. She was also suffering from the emotional abuse the Ex had imposed on her. Her self-esteem is at an all-time low. Meeting Conner McClain is the last thing she wants even though he makes her feel protected and cared for. The physical attraction and chemistry is strong between Faith and Conner and as the story progresses friendship and love prevails.

What I loved about the story was the importance placed on family and friends. Conner had a friend from his military time and that bond and story could be felt by the reader. Conner also had a strong family background as opposed to Faith whose family was dysfunctional. When Conner takes her to his family’s home for Thanksgiving Faith realizes the importance of tradition. Stranded at Christmas during a storm the couple must depend on friends and their own relationship to forge ahead and start the beginnings of their own traditions.

This book definitely can stand alone however I now want to get the others to see if the characters flow over from one book to another. A great book to curl up with during the Christmas season and I definitely can see it going into a Christmas stocking!

Great holiday-themed romance with an ahhh-mazing hero!

I only had one real issue with this story, but unfortunately, it was Faith, the heroine. I liked her at the start of the book. There were things I loved about her, chiefly, her hilarious yet totally understandable addiction to Devil Dogs. (For those who don’t have a sweet tooth, Devil Dogs are two chocolate cakes shaped like an éclair, with vanilla creme in between them. YUM!) And Faith was sweet and funny for a good portion of the story. But I felt like she was a coward about the things that really mattered. In the past, Faith had been betrayed by a man and now wants nothing to do with relationships. While this is a common and reasonable reaction, even when faced with the hero’s love, devotion, honesty, and every other wonderful thing about him, she still doubts him. I lost a lot of respect for her because of this and had a difficult time liking her again.

I really loved the hero, Connor, though. I thought he was pretty perfect, but while reading this book, I wondered if other readers would find him maybe too perfect. Or worse, perfectly boring. I definitely didn’t think so, but I’m not one who needs heroes to be damaged or flawed. What I liked most about Connor is that he has a great heart. He cares deeply for his friends and family; he’d do anything for them. He’s always thinking of others, like the way he knows Faith NEEDS coffee in the morning, so he finds a way to make sure she gets her coffee. I also enjoyed how honest Connor is. He tries to see things from another perspective, and he admits his mistakes and owns up to his feelings, even if it’s embarrassing or inconvenient. Even with all of that, he never seemed weak and never lost any of his manliness.

I’m on the fence with how I felt about the relationship between Faith and Connor. On one hand, I really liked them together. The Sexy Time was hot and there was plenty of it. I liked that they laughed a lot but could also have serious conversations. But on the other hand, since Faith was so busy protecting herself, it occasionally felt like Faith was using Connor just for sex, even though she wasn’t.

I really enjoyed this book and think it’s a great one to read this month. Of course, it’s set around the holiday, but the reason it’s such a great Christmas read is because Faith and Connor get snowed in at a quaint little cabin on Christmas Eve. Gah! Could there be ANYTHING more romantic?! Then, Connor cuts down a tree for Faith to put up inside the cabin, and they have to get creative with the decorations. It was so cute! I could go on and on about it but don’t want to spoil it. I’ll just say that I really loved that whole section of the book!

A BAD BOY FOR CHRISTMAS is Book 3 in the Second Chance series. I read the first book in this series at the beginning of the year, but I don’t think you need to read any of the previous books before reading this one.

BOTTOM LINE
I really enjoyed A BAD BOY FOR CHRISTMAS. The hero was ahhhh-mazing! Former military, current landscaper, decently in touch with his feelings… Yeah, I loved him. ☺ The heroine was less amazing for me, her cowardice overshadowing the things I liked about her. Still, there were laughs and plenty of drama.

I would recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance looking for a holiday-themed book with a manly-man hero who is in touch with his feelings!

Jong Yong, a former student from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, holds a PhD (Biomedical Engineering) and a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) (Hons I) from the University of Queensland, Australia. He also has an Advanced Diploma (Business Administration) and Practitioner Diploma (Applied Statistic). Before returning to his alma mater, he has worked as a semi-conductor engineering assistant, university tutor, research scientist, research manager in a hospital and then in a research institute. His research focus is in areas of biomedical engineering, statistical analyses and research ethics.

First published in 1917, On Growth and Form was at once revolutionary and conservative. Scottish embryologist D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson (1860-1948) grew up in the newly cast shadow of Darwinism, and he took issue with some of the orthodoxies of the day--not because they were necessarily wrong, he said, but because they violated the spirit of Occam's razor, in which simple explanations are preferable to complex ones. In the case of such subjects as the growth of eggs, skeletons, and crystals, Thompson cited mathematical authority: these were matters of "economy and transformation," and they could be explained by laws governing surface tension and the like. (He doubtless would have enjoyed the study of fractals, which came after his time.) In On Growth and Form, he examines such matters as the curve of frequency or bell curve (which explains variations in height among 10-year-old schoolboys, the florets of a daisy, the distribution of darts on a cork board, the thickness of stripes along a zebra's flanks, the shape of mountain ranges and sand dunes) and spirals (which turn up everywhere in nature you look: in the curve of a seashell, the swirl of water boiling in a saucepan, the sweep of faraway nebulae, the twist of a strand of DNA, the turns of the labyrinth in which the legendary Minotaur lived out its days). The result is an astonishingly varied book that repays skimming and close reading alike. Another excellent book whose Kindle version is terrible!

I have had a copy of this book since I was 16. I have given it as gifts, and believe it to be one of the fundamental books that has changed science and the way we think of the world. As you can tell I love this book. However, the Kindle version is almost useless. The tables are not reproduced in any readable way, and there are none of the pictures that are needed to understand the text. eBooks like this do a tremendous disservice to the Kindle. This could be a wonderful resource to have on the Kindle, but no care was taken in the transcription, and to charge for this is an outrage. There is absolutely no way that I could recommend the Kindle version of this wonderful book.

a classic beyond compare

This book was written in the 1st World War and revised in the 2nd World War by an author whose scholarship has not been excelled over all these years. This was the book that first brought my attention almost 70 years ago to Fibonacci series, logarithmic spiral, phi the golden ratio, and trasformative geometry applied to biological evolution of growth and forms. Profusely illustrated and annotated, this classic book is for keeps.

Unreadable because of poor production

I wish I had read the reviews to this edition before I bought it because I would not have wasted my money. However, my complaint is different from that of the others I have read. The book I received? I literally can't read it. Imagine using a copier to copy the pages of a book, with the "darkness" factor set high. That's what I got. A grey background to every page. There is such poor contrast between the type and the page that it's all just a big wash of grey. What a disappointment. btw there was no publisher listed anywhere on this edition - nor any mention that it was abridged. I suspect it is an Amazonian "on-demand" printing, apparently overseen by a broken robot. I shall search out the unabridged edition elsewhere.

Can't wait for more!

This series is KILLING me!
This is book 4 in the Mind Dimension series, if you are reading this book first, you will not understand what is going on.
I now know about the Enlightened and I was surprised to see how their lives are all intertwined with the Elders. I really want to know more about a few of the storylines that have been given to me. I love how authors give you bits and pieces to keep you wanting for more. This story has done just that, I need more.
Darren has become a driving force for information. He is uncovering more and more about himself and his abilities. In the last book, he has found a new state and ability to freeze time while in a dimension of frozen time. As I thought that was super cool when I read it, I find his ability and lack of ability more intriguing in this story. I have a need to know more about where he comes from and I am dying to know where it will go from here. I can't wait for more in this series.

A conspiracy, non-stop action, plots to grab power, secrets held and secrets revealed.

The Elders by Dima Zales is the fourth book in the five book Mind Dimension series, and the action is non-stop. At the end of the last book, The Enlightened, Darren has learned more about his real family that’s been hidden from him for his entire life.

He has found out who his birth parents were, and how he came to be raised by his two moms. He has been to the the compound of The Enlightened and met their leaders, some of whom had roles in his family’s past and his journey of discovery. And he has traveled a long way down the path of finding the ultimate enemy, The Super Pusher, who has been plotting against his family and loved ones all these years, and is responsible for several of their deaths.

At the beginning of this book, Darren and his family are attending the funeral of a person close to them who has turned out to be the architect of years of secrets and deceit. His two moms and friends are then kidnapped by the Enlightened in an attempt to force Darren to give in to their plan for domination.

From there, is in a mad race to find out the agenda of the Elders, their society, and their history with the Enlightened. He has to depend on his friends for aid, and extricate his friends when the plot turns against them. He may also have an important place in the future of both of these communities.

Darren is learning more about the society of the Elders, and various powers that he might be able to perfect, such as teleporting out of the Quiet to a specific location. Once again he works on being able to reach Level 2, the dimension that he can enter by phasing into the Quiet when he is already in the Quiet. This ability holds the key to a greater understanding of the society of the Mind Dimension.

As this series barrels down to the final act, Dima Zales has once again upped the tension and action level for Darren and his friends and family. This book is a solid addition to the series, and should not be skipped.

Lots happening in this book and lots of answers too!

Even at a funeral a lot happens. Mira is kidnapped along with Darren's two moms. The whole book is about Darren trying to save Mira from certain death. Darren get help from his friends and ends up in deep trouble when the Super Pusher turns guides his friends and then everyone is out to kill him.

He has to enter Level 2 to take care of things and save everyone. Mimir shows up again to advise since he really can't help out. A new entity appears as well called Daleb. Together these two beings help Darren make decisions that eventually lead him out of the whole mess. But at what cost?

He gets Eugene's help and what they are going to do will likely leave Darren inert forever. But he has to risk it for Mira.

There are twists and turns and you get to see him solve the mystery of who the Super Pusher is. You will be surprised.

After all of that action, Darren still has to tell his mother about her past that she can't remember. That is intense and you can't put the book down. You just have to keep reading.
I can't wait until book 5. It seems as if the series could have ended right here. It will be interesting to see what Dima Zales has in store for us next.
