The Me in the Mirror, by Connie Panzarino

Writer, activist and artist Connie Panzarino was born in 1947 with the rare disease Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type III, formerly called Amytonia Congenita. Throughout a childhood filled with both pain and joy, she strove to define herself: "I knew I was different. Now I had a name for the difference, like being Italian or Jewish. I was an Amytonia. I didn't understand if that meant that I would never walk, or if all it meant was lack of muscle tone. I didn't know that most children with this disease die before they're five years old." In this deeply moving and eloquent memoir, Connie Panzarino describes her decades of struggle and triumph, her relationships with family members and long-time lover Ron Kovic (author of Born on the Fourth of July), her eventual turn to lesbianism, and her years of pioneering work in the disability rights movement. Filled with spirit, passion and defiance, The Me In The Mirror tells the story of a remarkable life.

From Booklist
Panzarino is a severely disabled lesbian activist and art therapist, and her story is scary in its forthright honesty. Born with a rare progressive muscular disease, she has lived a life in which virtually no achievement is small and nothing is taken for granted. She speaks uncompromisingly about the pain of ill-advised childhood braces, the guilt at disappointing her parents, waiting for assistance with toileting, and being barred from elementary school and the day-to-day companionship of other children. Dependent on a mother with two additional children, one of them born with the same malady, Panzarino well communicates the great frustration, anguish, and turmoil she endured during her fight for education, employment, a usable wheelchair, reliable aides, transportation, accessibility, and, ultimately, a life of her own in which she could realize personal and political growth. A longtime friend and sometime lover of disability rights activist Ron Kovic, Panzarino eventually turned to lesbianism and political activism. She established Beechwood, a communal living environment for disabled women, where she continues her work as a therapist, writer, and activist. Whitney Scott

A Great Leader--A Great Woman
By John Fasano
I finished this book last night, and I was frankly infuriated by some of the earlier reviews posted about this book. This is probably the most illuminating book about the day to day existence of an extremely disabled person; which holds back nothing, that has ever been written. Panzarino, who, despite her disability was a powerful force for chance in the way the disabled are treated in society, passed away on the 4th of July of this year. Her passing only makes this book more poignant. Panzarino's style is eloquent and engaging; her story both heartbreaking and inspirational. This book is a MUST read for anyone interested in reading fascinating biographies of women who have truly helped to change the world, as well as a great tool for understanding what those with disabilities go through in a world that wasn't designed with them in mind. This book changed my view of the world profoundly. I am planning on buying it for all my friends as Xmas gifts--and hope that Connie's incredible courage wil inspire them as much as it did me.

Honest and Funny
By A Customer
I read this book a few years a go and loved it. I think it was an honest book. I know it is because I have SMA like the author so I am a good judge of the subject. This book is not "Preachy" or filled with religious meaning like some disabled books. Nor does it make the disabled look needy or helpless. It's just about her life. It's not supposed to go in to great detail of specific disability issues...that's what essays and textbooks are for. Even so, I do think it does give the average "walkie-talkie" insight of disabled culture. Everything from care, school, career and romance. The writing is in everyday language and shows her humor in dealing with her struggles. The main flaw is the poor edit job. I didn't find it too distracting (if you can handle reading a personal journal you should be OK with this book) and the book is a quick read. There is a great need for books on adults with born with disabilities and disabled women. I'm glad this book made it!

a baldly honest inside look into a disabled womin's life
By krista moongarden
Ms. Panzarino presents an accurate and passionate account of an absolutely remarkable life. She survived the disability that should have killed her as a child, the terrible pressures of her home, where she and her mother were trapped in a dance with no help for either. She fought her family and the "abled" world for her independence and THRIVED as a whole womin in a society which assigns a half-life to the disabled adult. I am new to the disabled community, having suffered a major stroke at the age of 49 and two small ones since. They have left me nearly speechless but I cannot even imagine the world Ms. Panzrino has had to live in. I can only admire this brave womin's strength, fortitude, intelligence and candor. The reviewer who did not see the life story and daily life of a disabled person did NOT read the same book I read!! This is and excellent read by an enlightened individual! My only disappointment is that there has not been a follow-up book since this wonderful tome was written!

An inspirational book
By Anne M. Marble
This isn't just a book about an athlete. Sure, it's a book about a man who defeated poverty and overcame adversity to become one of the greatest Olympic gold medalists.
But Jesse Owens is honest about the turbulent times he endured after the Olympics were over. Just as importantly, he also tells the story about how he almost let his faith in God fall along the wayside. Faith, family, and school are all important given important places in this book.

The Best Book ever written about Jesse Owens
By A Customer
This is the best book i have ever read about Jesse Owens. It tells you about the tradegy of his childhood and how he was almost killed in a freak farming ancident. Then it tells you about his glourious triomph in the olympics. Then tells of his quick glory and how he was robbed of all his money. Jesse Owens and Steve Prefontaine are the greatest runners ever.

Another Hit
By Elizabeth Van
Marilyn Pappano has transformed the ordinary into something extra with The Princess and the Mercenary. In this continuation of Romancing the Crown, Anna & Tyler come alive. As they search for Anna's brother, Prince Lucas, each must struggle to work out the differences in class, age and experience. What a wonderful journey. I couldn't put it down. Thank you, Ms Pappano, for the hours of escape and enjoyment.

The Second Oldest Profession: Spies and Spying in the Twentieth Century, by Phillip Knightley

The first full history of spies, spying, and the intelligence bureaucracy, from the author of The Philby Conspiracy.

In 1909, the business of spying was hoisted from the domain of a few European descendents to the highest reaches of British government with the formation of Britain's SIS. Acting in response to a totally fraudulent fear--the German spy scare that preceded World War I--the British soon had a lot of company as Germany, Russia, France, and other powers large and small joined the mad rush toward information and espionage. Not far behind came the biggest of them all, first with the OSS and then with the CIA, fueled by paranoia and by more money than any new bureaucracy had ever seen. "Bigger than State by '48," was the CIA's slogan on its founding in 1947. And it was.

Now intelligence is a very big business with a very rich history, told here with a depth and verve never before brought to the subject, by a master historian. All of the legends and their immensely readable stories and here--Sorge, Donovan, Philby, Mata Hari, Golitsyn, Angleton, Penkovsky--and behind them a large question: did any act of these spies and their masters make any difference at all in the course of history?

From Library Journal
The first modern, permanent intelligence agency was created about 1909, and within a few years all the great powers had similar agencies. Concentrating almost entirely on Britain, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States, Knightley asserts that these services are not worth the enormous sums they cost, that they are not effective in predicting enemy actions, and that they cause more trouble than they prevent. He uses anecdotes of failed operations and jaundiced interpretations of other episodes in an attempt to prove that intelligence services corrode a democratic society's liberty and pervert international relations. Knightley lambasts even such famous operations as ULTRA, MAGIC, and the XX Committee as overrated and mythologized. His argument might have had greater credibility if it were not so shrill and one-sided.Edwin B. Burgess, U.S. Army TRALINET Ctr., Fort Monroe, Va.

The Second Oldest, and "Just as Honorable as the First!"
By F. S. L'hoir
In "The Second Oldest Profession," Phillip Knightley has penned a compelling account of the ongoing saga of the British Secret Intelligence Service, a once-'non-existent' organization that was gestated appropriately enough in the fantasies of Rudyard Kipling's Great Game and pre-World War I spy novels. These, the author notes, ignited a frenzy of hysteria against various enemies, both actual and imaginary. As SIS became a reality (and other agencies and nations joined in the intelligence rush) the fantasy became compounded--often careening out of control--due to the deception that is, necessarily, embedded in the core of espionage.

Mr. Knightley questions whether governments ought to sponsor intelligence agencies, which, he notes, tend to be costly, self-perpetuating many-headed monsters, the growth of which "always seems to be accompanied by a reduction in civil liberties" (p. 366). Thriving on "secrecy which corrodes a democratic society," the intelligence monster "juggles all our destinies in the name of protecting them" (p. 392), a proposition that seems even more cogent today than in 1986 when the book was first published.

Phillip Knightley's books are eminently readable, and "The Second Oldest Profession" is no exception. The book, which serves as a reader's guide to British intelligence agencies (e.g., SIS, MI5, SOE) with stopovers at the Abwehr, the KGB, and the CIA, is fascinating, both to the reader approaching the topic for the first time and to the "addict," who cannot get enough of the subject. With considerable wit (e.g., "KGB: Dzerzhinsky's Pride, Stalin's Prejudice"), Mr. Knightley rounds up the usual suspects--a cast of "thousands" whose names have become household words (at least, in some households). In relating the notable triumphs and even more notable disasters of the intelligence world, Phillip Knightley never fails to inform and to whet the interests of his readers.

Outdated Shrill Mythbusting
By A. Ross
I picked this book up thinking it was a general history of modern espionage, based on the subtitle "Spies and Spying in the Twentieth Century." However, the subtitle of the original British edition is much a more accurate description of what lies within: "The Spy as Bureaucrat, Patriot, Fantasist and Whore." Knightley is not a historian, but an investigative journalist, and as such, he's much more interested in destroying myths than anything else. Published some twenty years ago, in the midst of the Cold War, the book is a rather shrill critique of national intelligence agencies. Read today, the original edition (apparently an updated edition was published several years ago), suffers from being somewhat outdated, rather under researched, and presuming a great deal of reader knowledge. It's not a particularly good book for anyone who hasn't already read a few general histories of intelligence, as it presupposes a fair amount of familiarity with various "famous" espionage incidents: the "Lucy" spy ring, ULTRA intercepts, and especially the whole Philby, Burgess, et al debacle within the British services. Readers (such as myself), without a solid grounding in this history will have little basis of comparison when Knightley starts pounding away at accepted wisdom.

In terms of being outdated, so much has happened in the world since the original publication (such as the collapse of the USSR, the opening of KGB and Stasi archives, Aldrich Ames, etc.) that it's hard not to read it today without wondering what new information is out there on all the topics he speculates so freely on. And make no mistake, Knightley does engage in a great deal of speculation in the book, and it's hard to know what to make of his repeated dangling of "doesn't it seem more likely that..." before various elaborate explanations of why the accepted interpretation of something is wrong. And yet, even when he's completely categorical about something, one is forced to take it with a grain of salt. In the one area he mentions that I do know a little about, he's quite wrong. Early on, Knightley characterizes German saboteurs operating in the U.S. before the U.S. entered World War I, as "German-Americans frequently acting on their own initiative." in fact, there is ample documentation before world courts that there was an official German sabotage effort directed at U.S. arms factories and transportation facilities organized and directed by German government officials working out of the German embassy in Washington, D.C. Some of the operatives were German-American, but many were not -- and it was very organized (albeit, not as capably as one might expect) and not on anyone's "own initiative." This example also illustrates Knightley's lack of depth and bread in terms of research. As a journalist, he seems more comfortable quoting from personal interviews and drawing upon the work of other researchers than he is digging through dusty archives to gather supporting material.

These critiques are somewhat wistful on my part, because I actually am quite sympathetic to the jaundiced eye Knightley takes toward the intelligence agencies. The basic gist of the book is that throughout history, intelligence agencies have wielded power and influence completely disproportionate to their actual value while costing far far too much for what they accomplish. He focuses primarily on the establishment and rapid ballooning of British, American, and Soviet national intelligence services over the previous century, and sets out to demolish any romantic notions of the modern spy. The story starts by attempting to explain how the creation of the first modern intelligence agency in Britain was the result of some well orchestrated fear mongering by a popular writer, and some fine bureaucratic wrangling by one man. He sees much the same situation in the U.S., and lays the origin for the KGB at Britain's doorstep, theorizing that it emerged in reaction to (very real) British attempts to thwart the Bolshevik revolution (Let's just say that you'll never watch "Reilly: Ace of Spies" the same way again.)

Bureaucracy figures large in his tale, as he sees an inverse relationship between the size of the espionage bureaucracy and budget, and actual effectiveness. Some of his examples from World War II of bureaucracy's ineptness as dealing with routing accurate information to those who can act on it, as well as dealing with internal dissent, read almost word for word as if they applied to the "war on terror" and buildup to the invasion of Iraq. Of course, bureaucracies exist to perpetuate themselves, and Knightley argues that no one does it better than spies. They have the ultimate advantages of hazy mission and mandate, "black" budgets, easily evaded oversight, and no practical method of assessing effectiveness, ergo, no accountability. And as he points out time and again, spy agencies have the penultimate fallback of being able to declare that their successes can never be reveal ed... because they're secret...top secret. By the end of his shrill (and again, one wishes for a more reasoned tone throughout) exploration and litany of espionage debacles, it's hard not find oneself mulling over the prospect of what the practical difference would be to national security (not to mention civil liberties) if the budgets of spy agencies were simply cut in half. Of course, the CIA would at least be able to augment its funds by reentering the drug trade so capably engaged in during the Vietnam War and in Central America in the '80s (subjects Knightley does not touch upon).

Macarons, by Pierre Hermé

Pierre Hermé is universally acknowledged as the king of French pastry with shops in Tokyo, Paris and London. He is the best, and has even been described as a couturier of pastry. This is a man at the top of his art and there is no question his macarons are in a league of its own. Macarons are the aristocrats of pastry; these brightly colored, mini meringues, daintily sandwiched together with gooey fillings, have become a holy grail for cookery fanatics and there are even food blogs dedicated to them. Now for the first time, all the macaron recipes from this most celebrated French pâtissier are published in English. The French language edition has been one of the most sought after cookbooks of recent years. And just like Pierre Hermé’s famous macarons, it would be difficult for any macaron book to surpass this one. There are 200 pages of recipes and beautiful food photography, and because making macarons is mostly about technique, rather than just a standard recipe, readers will appreciate the 32-step-by-step photo-illustrated instructions for making shells and fillings. All the classics are here like dark chocolate, praline, coffee, and pistachio, but others feature the more unusual macarons that Hermé is justly famous for: Isfahan is one, with lychee, rose and raspberry, Arabesque with apricot and pistachio, Satine with passion fruit, orange and cream cheese, Mandarin and pink pepper, black truffles, balsamic vinegar as well as a bright-green macaron filled with fresh mint. Anyone interested in making macarons will find Pierre Hermé’s the best book in print.

Great book to have....
By JoAnn
I bought this book eventhough I know how to make french macarons already. I just want to add it on my collections. I truly love this book, great pictures and really have good filling recipes.

Anyway, I can understand why the others gave it a bad reviews. For you to actually learn how to make proper macarons, either watch a step by step video (has to be very detail), or take a class (which I did). There's some major technique details that you have to learn, and reading a recipe online or books are not going to help. Even when I took the class, I wasted 3 batches when I did it on my own. And if you are seriously wants to learn, invest on a scale. U.S. measurements aren't going to cut it. You need to measure in grams to get an accurate results. And from experience, Italian meringue method is better than French or Swiss meringue method.. And I agree with "Carmen Adorno". This is a very delicate cookie so "Repetition" is the key. I always take orders from my friends because it gives me practice.

Good for Ideas but Impractical for Learning
By lovemodern
I have been baking macarons for a few months now. I was excited to see that the Herme book would be available for the English market. First of all you must know that Herme uses the Italian method in making his macarons. No French, no Swiss. I don't particularly like handling boiling sugar, so this was a big disappointment to me. I prefer the French method which requires no soft ball stage boiling of sugar to make a meringue. Temperatures are in metric units, which doesn't bother me, but may bother some people. I have become accustomed to measuring in grams. There is no way around it in this precise art form.

This book is targeted toward those already familiar with baking macarons. It offers no trouble shooting guide. You are on your own if things don't turn out quite like the beautiful pictures in the book. The ingredients used in the recipes can be quite exotic to America. The resource guide in the back of the book provides names and websites of suppliers, but most are in the UK or France. The recipes produce impractical quantities of macarons. 144 shells = 72 macarons? That is 6 dozen macarons per batch! Be prepared to make only 1/2 or 1/3 the recipe. You don't want 6 dozen macarons that you decide you or no one else likes.

It's a beautiful book given its pictures. It can spark your imagination in producing your own recipes. However, this book is not practical for the novice. In addition, it has not been properly translated for use in the US market.

If you are looking for a book to begin your journey into the world of macarons, I recommend Les Petits Macarons by Gordon and McBride.

For the Macaron Making Purest
By noelle k
It took me a long time to get up the courage to tackle the art of macaron making. The methods here and flavor profiles are the real deal and yes, they are expensive to make. But the results make the complicated process and the price worth it. If your goal is trying to create some of the best macarons you'll ever eat, share, or sell, this book will get you there.

As other reviewers have noted, the description of making the Italian meringue is vague in the recipes, but the introductory section of the book explains in painstaking step-by-step photos how to make each element and what it should look like. Adjustments may need to be made depending on your ingredients and environment. The recipes for the fillings alone (which of course are the best part of the macaron), is worth the price of the book. Some favorites macarons from the book include Bitter Chocolate, Americano (grapefruit), Lemon, Coffee, Salted-Butter Caramel, Infinitely Chocolate and Infinitely Vanilla.

Circling the Sun: A Novel, by Paula McLain

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR, BOOKPAGE, AND SHELF AWARENESS • “Paula McLain is considered the new star of historical fiction, and for good reason. Fans of The Paris Wife will be captivated by Circling the Sun, which . . . is both beautifully written and utterly engrossing.”—Ann Patchett, Country Living

Paula McLain, author of the phenomenal bestseller The Paris Wife, now returns with her keenly anticipated new novel, transporting readers to colonial Kenya in the 1920s. Circling the Sun brings to life a fearless and captivating woman—Beryl Markham, a record-setting aviator caught up in a passionate love triangle with safari hunter Denys Finch Hatton and Karen Blixen, who as Isak Dinesen wrote the classic memoir Out of Africa.

Brought to Kenya from England as a child and then abandoned by her mother, Beryl is raised by both her father and the native Kipsigis tribe who share his estate. Her unconventional upbringing transforms Beryl into a bold young woman with a fierce love of all things wild and an inherent understanding of nature’s delicate balance. But even the wild child must grow up, and when everything Beryl knows and trusts dissolves, she is catapulted into a string of disastrous relationships.

Beryl forges her own path as a horse trainer, and her uncommon style attracts the eye of the Happy Valley set, a decadent, bohemian community of European expats who also live and love by their own set of rules. But it’s the ruggedly charismatic Denys Finch Hatton who ultimately helps Beryl navigate the uncharted territory of her own heart. The intensity of their love reveals Beryl’s truest self and her fate: to fly.

Set against the majestic landscape of early-twentieth-century Africa, McLain’s powerful tale reveals the extraordinary adventures of a woman before her time, the exhilaration of freedom and its cost, and the tenacity of the human spirit.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of July 2015: Sometimes a reader craves a good, old-fashioned yarn. This much anticipated novel from the author of The Paris Wife is exactly that: an engrossing story of love and adventure in colonial Africa, complete with gorgeous landscape, dissolute British ex-pats, and lots of derring-do with horses, motorcars and airplanes. That it is also the best kind of contemporary historical novel – the kind that teaches you something about the real people and events of the time – is a bonus. At the center of the novel is Beryl Markham (born – you gotta love it – Clutterbuck), the headstrong daughter of a British colonial who grew up more comfortable among the people and animals of her adopted Kenya than in the homes of its landed gentry. When Beryl’s mother leaves the family and her father gives up the farm, she marries (at 16) a gentleman farmer, a drunk too louche to be much of a husband. Like privileged but love-hungry teenage girls past and future, Beryl seeks companionship from her horses, becoming the first and greatest female horse trainer in the region. Along the way, she hobnobs with Kenyan high society, including, but not limited to, Karen Blixen (who authored her own epic story, Out of Africa, under the pen name Isaak Dinesen) and her lover Denys Finch Hatten (who will always be Robert Redford to those of us who watched him play the role in the movie version of Dinesen’s book.) Much bed-hopping and relationship-boundary-pushing ensue, with all the teeth-gnashing and yearning that goes along with it, no matter the era. Those who knew about Markham before reading this book may be surprised by how little there is about her as a pilot. She is, after all, the first woman to fly across the Atlantic from east to west, and she wrote her own memoir, 1942’s West with the Night; here, it is only in the book’s frame – a prologue and its final chapter – that we get a glimpse of the way that Beryl will, literally, soar. But McLain doesn’t seem interested in portraying her as a trailblazing feminist with an idea about changing the world; the Beryl Markham here is noteworthy precisely because she is NOT those things so much as a girl who grew up pushing back against conventions that got in her way. “But you’ve never been afraid of anything, have you?” Finch Hatten says to her in their last meeting. “I have, though,” she replies. “I’ve been terrified. . .I just haven’t let that stop me.” -- Sara Nelson

Unremarkable; Read West with the Night Instead
By Steven M. Anthony
This is a novel of historical fiction, taking as its subject the life of Beryl Markham, an English woman who grew up and spent much of her time in British East Africa (Kenya). Ms. Markham was quite a free spirit and trailblazer, undertaking many activities (horse training and aviation) that were strictly the province of males at the time.

This novel is very simply written and largely unremarkable. In a move certainly meant to raise interest and boost sales, many of the characters overlap with those of Isek Dinesen’s Out of Africa. You’ll find Baroness Karen Blixen, Denis Finch-Hatton, Lord and Lady Delamere, Bror and Barkley playing prominent roles. Not being aware of the actual history of Ms. Markham, it is hard to tell how much artistic license is taken here, though I don’t doubt that the English ex-pat community in Kenya was a tight knit group.

Again, the writing is very pedestrian and the characters rather two dimensional. Having been to Kenya, it is a pleasure to relive the landscapes and cultures, but this book does little in my opinion to bring those things to life. Overlapping so much with Out of Africa is a double edged sword, because the writing in this case pales by comparison.

Markham was largely a horse trainer by birth (following in her father’s footsteps) and training. It is therefore inexcusable that the author would make some pretty basic errors in both terminology and practice when dealing with her profession. She repeatedly refers to Markham purchasing yearling and two year old “studs”. Studs are breeders. Prior to age four, male thoroughbreds are referred to as “colts”, thereafter “horses” until sent to the breeding shed, at which point they become “studs”. She refers to a yearling “stud” undergoing training. Yearlings are too immature to undergo training (not the same as “breaking”), and do not race until age two. The type of races referred to by the author (1¾ miles) would not be undertaken by a two year old colt and certainly not against far stronger older horses.

The novel also largely papers over the widely acknowledged affair between Markham and the Duke of Gloucester, Prince Henry, in effect insinuating that it never happened. This despite the fact that the Prince paid her an annuity for the remainder of her 83 year long life. Given her impressively long string of lovers (both while married and single), it is doubtful that her friendship with the Duke was platonic.

Finally, in the Acknowledgements it is disclosed that Ms. Markham penned an autobiography of sorts, West with the Night, which was hailed by Ernest Hemingway as being beautifully written. Given a choice between the two, I can’t imagine you’d read this instead.

Some things good; some not

Circling the Sun—My thoughts
Thirty some years ago I read Out of Africa, West with the Night, and biographies of both Beryl Markham and Karen Blixen. I was mesmerized by the characters of Beryl and Karen and their intertwining lives and also by the glimpses of Africa gleaned from their writings. So I was anxious to revisit the characters and places in Paula McClain’s new novel about Beryl Markham, Circling the Sun.
In some ways it was a rewarding read. McClain’s prose is lush, fluid, crisp. I noted that McClain has a degree in poetry, and her writing style attests to that fact. The novel covers the span of Beryl’s life from childhood to her thirties. I feel that McClain did a fine job of pulling out the important phases of Beryl’s life during that time frame and connecting them together in a compelling narrative. Also, I applaud McClain’s depiction of Beryl as strong willed and self-determine. And more importantly, we see that Beryl is talented and competent in her pursuits of horse training and later flying.
But I feel there are other aspects of Beryl’s characterization that miss the mark and do so by a long shot. Beryl is endowed with a wisdom and philosophical bent that can only come from years of living. The bride of 16 in the novel seems more patient, more knowing, more socially skilled than the characters around her. McClain does rightfully depict Beryl as a character who is victimized by the abandonment and betrayal of family and friends, but the Beryl of the novel rises to a level of magnanimity and nobility that doesn’t match the depictions of her in the conversations and writings of her contemporaries and biographers. In Circling the Sun, we see a wounded Beryl who comes to the aid of her faltering parents and who chooses to simply ignore the vicious rumors that plague her life. We are lead to believe that tales of Beryl’s ruthless pursuit of unattainable men and her shocking disregard for friendships and pubic decorum are concoctions fostered by gossips and society vigilantes. I don’t think so. There are too many witnesses, too many friends, too many sources and biographers who paint Beryl as an opportunist with little regard for the feelings of others.
So I find McClain’s portrait of Beryl nearly impossible to accept, and I find it hard to believe that McClain actually holds Beryl in such pristine regard. She (McClain), after all, has read the same bios and articles I have. McClain tells us that she found a kinship with Beryl because she, too, was abandoned by her mother at an early age, only to have her own mother reappear when she was in her 20’s in the same way that Beryl’s mother did. So then, hmmmm . . . perhaps McClain has over identified with her character, and the Beryl she has created is mythologized in a way that is untrue to her and also unfair to Beryl and to us, the readers. Beryl’s true merits and accomplishments are well worth exploring and celebrating, and I believe she can be viewed as a more complex character and still a sympathetic character when the dark side of her personality is part of the narrative.
Interestingly enough, I came across an article in Town and Country magazine “An Insanely Glamorous Love Triangle” written by McClain herself in which she says,
"The mystery of the woman [Beryl] herself is only deepened by her writing— lyrical descriptions of paradise layered with pointed subterfuge. Instead of exposing the things that hurt her—her mother, for instance, or her father's betrayal—she romanticizes the difficulties of the natural world and of Green Hills, her father's farm, faultless as any Eden before the Fall."
Really? Yes, the descriptions are lyrical, but Beryl does not describe her father’s farm as an African paradise. And the purpose of West With The Night is not to provide an expose of her “damaged” childhood. It is rather a celebration of the life she embraced in Africa, both the good and the bad. Her vignettes are a collection of stories about encounters and friendships with the land, the animals, and the people around her.
In speaking of Karen, Denys, and Beryl, in the article Markham says, “These three were not simple people. And if they were cagey and difficult sometimes—unreliable narrators of their own lives—even so I can find something to admire in it.”
She goes on to say, “These shadows aren't visible in Out of Africa, which mythologizes Finch Hatton and over-perfects their love story.”
Those of us who have read Karen’s Out of Africa know that Karen and Denys’ love affair is not portrayed at all in her writings. Denys is only a marginal character because that is not what her book is about. Out of Africa, like West With The Night, is a collection of stories about one woman’s encounters with the African world and the people in it.
So, sorry, Ms. McClain, but I feel you are the unreliable story teller, not Ms. Dinesen or Ms. Markham. I can only appreciate and applaud a historical character brought to life when I feel it is an honest depiction. I don’t think your depiction of Beryl is an honest depiction.

A Woman True To Herself
By MaryAnn Dodd
A n enlighting historical novel about Beryl Markham and her days of growing up in Africa . Her mother left her and her husband to return to England when Beryl was only four. She grew up with African children and they were her best playmates. She is pushed into marriage at sixteen to a man twice her age. She is not the regular English wife. She gets a job training horses and becomes the first licensed female horse trainer in the world. The novel is focused mainly on her skills as a trainer rather than her airplane flying years. It also tells of her love affairs with several men and especially her love of Denys Finch Hatton and her friendship with Karen Blixen.

I was captured by the beautiful descriptions of Africa and the different seasons. The life of the Colonial British in Kenya during the twenties and thirties was educational for me. I enjoyed reading about that lifestyle and the "rules" of behavior for the Colonialists.

This book has led me to read Beryl Markham's autobiography West With The Night. I have the copy with photographs. I was especially interested in seeing one of Denys Finch Hatton.
