Romeo and Juliet meets Children of the Corn in this one-of-a-kind romantic horror

“When you fall in love, you will carve out your heart and throw it into the deepest ocean. You will be all in—blood and salt.”

These are the last words Ash Larkin hears before her mother returns to the spiritual commune she escaped long ago. But when Ash follows her to Quivira, Kansas, something sinister and ancient waits among the rustling cornstalks of this village lost to time.

Ash is plagued by memories of her ancestor, Katia, which harken back to the town’s history of unrequited love and murder, alchemy and immortality. Charming traditions soon give way to a string of gruesome deaths, and Ash feels drawn to Dane, a forbidden boy with secrets of his own.

As the community prepares for a ceremony five hundred years in the making, Ash must fight not only to save her mother, but herself—and discover the truth about Quivira before it’s too late. Before she’s all in—blood and salt.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Dead bodies in a cornfield in the middle of Kansas, a mysterious ritual centuries in the making, visions of a dead girl, and the sinister plotting of an immortal Francisco Vázquez de Coronado all conspire to turn New York City teen Ash Larkin's life upside down in this complicated but original paranormal tale. Ash and her twin brother take off for Kansas to find their mother, who has decided to return to the cult she escaped when she was pregnant with them. Their spotty knowledge of family history and Ash's increasingly disturbing visions about her ancestors do not prepare the siblings for the people in the insular community of Quivira, who have clearly been waiting for them. Thrown into the center of a ritual she does not understand, Ash must sort through violent visions of 16th-century love, loss, and betrayal in order to find her mother and protect her brother. Help comes in the form of a handsome boy she's not sure she can trust. What readers know of the key players' complex histories and motivations changes as things are revealed to Ash in her visions, which makes the narrative difficult to follow at times. However, Liggett keeps things moving along with plenty of sexy, frightening, and funny moments. While the history gets a bit convoluted, the idea that when Coronado wandered into Kansas looking for gold, he stumbled across immortality and is still around, pulling puppet strings in a doomsday cult, is too good to pass up. VERDICT A sweeping, scary, and entertaining paranormal read.—Beth McIntyre, Madison Public Library, WI

Review

—Carrie Ryan, New York Times bestselling author of The Forest of Hands and Teeth

“An intense, exhilarating debut brimming with darkness, passion, and impending doom. Kim Liggett’s twisted imagination and gutsy storytelling seduced and thrilled me with each gorgeous, blood-spattered page. This is a book to devour as soon as it comes out.”
—Nova Ren Suma, author of Imaginary Girls and The Walls Around Us

“Kim Liggett’s Blood and Salt hits some delightfully dark notes. Bloodline curses, post-mortem messages from a girl strung up by a rope, and a cult in the middle of a sea of sinister corn? Count me in. This one is eerie, and full of doom.”
—Kendare Blake, author of Anna Dressed in Blood and Antigoddess

“Vengeful ghosts, dead bodies in cornfields, and a centuries-old secret kept me flipping the pages until the thrilling end.”
—Megan Shepherd, author of The Madman’s Daughter

“Eerie, bloody, and beautiful.”
—April Genevieve Tucholke, author of Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

Hauntingly Beautiful Love Story!!!!
By Nicole @ Nicoles' Novel Reads
Blood and Salt is an incredibly captivating and compelling romantic horror love story. I was at the edge of my seat hungry for more. From the first page, I was hooked. Kim Liggett's Blood and Salt is the perfect read if you are hunting for a haunting and chilling horror romance. A dead girl always haunts Ashlyn Larkin. Ash finds out this girl is tied to her because of her mother's history in Quivira, Kansas. Ash ends up leaving her home in NYC with her twin brother to return to the spiritual commune her mother once lived in.

Ash and Rhys are twins and they are complete opposites of each other. Ash is daring, curious and competitive. Rhys is cautious and likes to follow everything by the books. There are a couple of twists and turns that I thought worked well in the book. I love the flashback memories that Ash has throughout the whole novel. It helps complete the story and ties the past with the present and future. The intricate history of Quivira definitely interested me. All I can think of is Vampire Diaries and the love triangle between Qetsiyah, Silas and Amara. The promise to be immortal between two people is not promised between the intended and someone is angry and wants revenge. The villagers of Quivira remind of the Travelers. Both live in a cult like world.

Liggett's descriptive words are hauntingly beautiful. She also adds a bit of comedy through Rhys and weaves magic within the a Village like society. Five hundred years will unravel due to the ultimate sacrifice of love!

I would definitely suggest reading this novel for the month of October. You will definitely be craving for more. Liggett's words bewitch the reader and you will be scared to turn off the light. For some readers, I highly suggest not reading this book at night. I cannot guarantee that you will have nightmares or be creeped out.

BUY THIS BOOK NOW! Perfect Halloween Read.
By Amazon Customer
Wow, wow, wow! Guys, you could stick around to read this review, or you could take my word and go order this book right now. Bypass the library, you're going to want to possess your own copy of this masterpiece.

Kim Liggett steps into the world of YA in a HUGE way. This book is pure perfection. The characters, the story, the dialogue, ETC! I've got so much to say, so I'm just going to dive in-

The characters you meet in the beginning of the book will be completely changed by the end of the book. There's nothing wrong with that, not at all, that's great character arcs and development in play there.

The story blew my mind! If you've read my reviews before, you'd know that the books that completely rip the rug out from underneath me are my favorite kinds of books and this one absolutely did that. This story grabbed that rug, pulled it, and kept dragging it! Incredible! I was so impressed with the building of the story - it was a steady build until things got crazy and it was fabulous; almost like a firework - climbing, climbing, climbing, KABOOM.

The imagery in this book is hauntingly beautiful. Scenes are so vivid in your head as you're reading. This book has a considerable amount of gore and that mixture of gore and vivid imagery is completely OK with me. *Thumbs Up Emoji* Her descriptions and her metaphors are gold. I fell in love with Kim's writing from page one. Her metaphors are really something to watch out for because they are perfect.

Gosh, I'm sorry this is a love fest, but seriously this book is incredible. This is one of those books that makes me think I'm being too frivolous when I hand out five star book reviews. This book doesn't compare - I wish I could give it ten stars. Watch out for my Best Books of 2015 - This might have topped the list!

Equal parts romantic, terrifying, dreamy, sexy, and funny--and wholly unique
By beebe
I loved this book. It's equal parts romantic, terrifying, dreamy, sexy, and funny--and wholly unique. The first line really hooked me, and the poetic, cinematic language throughout was lovely to read. One of the best examples of atmosphere (in writing) that I've read in a long time.
